Mia's pov (prologue)
"Mom can we please play at least one game of hide and seek?" I asked with a pout.

"Alright I guess. Only if you promise to eat vegetables tonight." She replied sternly.

"Okay pinky promise." I said and wrapped my small pinky in her bigger one.

"Good girl, now sweetie I'll count to 50 and you hide" my mother said looking down at me with her beautiful smile.

"Okay mommy." I said and ran off. I have a secret hiding place under my closet, I just pull up an attic like door and go down into a small room. The room was filled with my belongings. Just as I was closing the door I heard my mom nearing 50.

"40" she said and I quietly shut the door, only being able to hear very quiet mumbling from her.

A moment passed and I heard a muffled sound coming from upstairs. A quiet giggle escaped my lips and I went further into the dark corner. It was dead silent until I heard a dreadful word. "RADS." I heard my mom cry out in pain.

"Mommy?" I asked and made my way towards the door. Just as I was about to open it I heard a loud smash of glass and a thud. I put my ears against the door and went as quiet as I could. "RADS." I heard a soft gasp before it was dead silent.

I threw my hand over my mouth to stop the screams that wanted to escape. The word"Rads" was what my mom and I used as a form of danger. She had always told me that whenever she said rads, I had to be aware and prepared for anything, anyone.

I quietly crawled to a corner and sat in my little room for what felt like days, but must have been hours.

"Maya!" A voice screamed from outside the door. I tensed up in fear. "Where are you?" my sister sobbed. "A-aria" I quietly gasped, my voice was scratchy and my throat was sore. "Aria" I sobbed louder. I stood up with shaky legs and made my way to the door.

I pushed it open with all the strength left in me and landed on my closet floor, gasping. "Aria." I screamed. I heard footsteps pound down the stairs and all of a sudden I was pulled into a tight hug. "You're okay." She cried into my shoulder. I looked over her shoulder and saw my moms bloodied body. I ran over to her and sobbed into her chest. "Mommy." I said, barely breathing. I felt Aria wrap her arms around me and pull me back. "Lets go." She whispered weakly. "Wheres dad?" I asked in a mixture of fear and hope.

"I-i dont know." She muttered, with silent tears flowing down her face.
