An orange dragon stood at the edge of the cliff, surrounded by the SkyWing queen and a couple guards. In her talons was a big SkyWing egg - but showing through the pale shell was not the common red, gold, or orange scales of a SkyWing, but rather a burst of fiery red and yellow.

Starling could feel the eyes of Queen Crimson watching her as her claws clutched the egg.

She knew that she would have to drop it over the cliff, drop her unhatched dragonet to plunge for her death. Starling wished she could have kept her, but the flaring red inside the egg had given it away. My dragonet is a firescales.

Starling tried to let go, but her mother's instinct caused her to hold her egg even tighter, and tears streamed from her eyes. There was a huge lump in her throat, so big that she felt like she couldn't breath, making her neck ache.

"Having trouble?" Queen Crimson stalked forward. Her talons reached towards the egg, and a malicious look gleamed in the queen's eyes. "I could help, oh yes, I could help."

Queen Crimson lunged at the egg, and Starling reacted instinctually, flinging her wings protectively over the egg. Rage flashed across the queen's face as her claws tore mercilessly at Starling's scales. The orange SkyWing let out an agitated shriek, writhing, but the guards immediately came forward and held her down.

The queen slit the struggling dragon's throat with one swipe of her claws, and Sparling went limp. The corpse of the orange dragon slid against the rocky floor and started to fall, but crimson talons snatched it. The egg flew from the dead SkyWing's claws and plunged into the forests below.

Queen Crimson followed the egg with her eyes for a moment, watching it gather speed, then pushed off the orange corpse as well. No egg can survive a fall like that. A small, cold, humorless smile twisted itself onto her snout.

The queen flicked her tail, eyeing the bloody cliff with disdain, then whirled around, flinging out her wings and flying towards the palace, leaving her guards to stumble after her.

Queen Crimson's claws curled as she heard her guards' scattered wingbeats behind her, and she remembered the feeling of Sparling's scales against her talons. Now that problem is solved.

There will be no firescales to endanger the Sky Kingdom.
