Shawn liked it.  Why wouldn't he?  They both held it.  For almost a minute.

"I thought you said you weren't going to do that," said Shawn, smiling.

"Well," said Cassidy, "I felt like it."

"I'll call you," said Shawn.

"Okay," said Cassidy.  She was still looking at him like she had before.  Fondly.

"Bye, Cass," he said.

"Cass?" she said, having never heard the nickname before.

Shawn turned around back to face her and thought about it.

"Yeah," he said.  "Cass."

Cass smiled.

"Hey, mom?"

"Mmhmm?"

"Do you think I'm ready to kiss boys?"

"I had my first kiss when I was a little younger than you," Cassidy's mom replied, folding the clothes.  Cassidy was sitting next to her, thinking.  "You're ready to kiss whoever you want."

"When do you think you should first kiss a person?  Like, in a relationship?"

"It was different when I was younger," said her mom.  "But I think you should do it whenever you feel comfortable with it."

"Hm," said Cass.

"Why?"

"Well, there was this boy," started Cassidy.

"Mmhmm," said her mother, following the story.  She sounded interested.

"And he had this bad reputation of upsetting girls, so when he came to me, I told him I wouldn't date him, because he couldn't hold a girl for a week."

"Good move," said her mother.  She continued folding laundry, but Cassidy knew she was paying full attention.

"So he said he could, and I challenged him to it. It's been five days.

"So he's doing a pretty good job," said her mother.

"I didn't want to kiss him, originally," said Cass.  "But I did it anyway.  He walked me home."

"Was that who picked you up yesterday morning to walk with you?"

"Yes."

"Has he done that for any other girls?"

"No," answered Cassidy.  "Usually it's a one day thing, with him."

"Well then, I think he likes you enough to have earned your kiss," said her mother.

Cassidy went to bed that Friday with her mother's words on her mind.

The phone rang, right when Cassidy had hoped it would.  She had been waiting for Shawn's call all day.  Well, it was only afternoon.

"Hello?" she said, picking up the phone.

"Hi, Cass," said his voice.

"I don't know if I can see you today," she said.  "It's my cousin's birthday, so my parents and I are going to their house."

"That's okay.  Gives me time to plan something good for tomorrow."

Cassidy smiled.  "Anyway, you're going over to Cory's?"

"Yeah."

"I'll see you tomorrow, okay?"

"Alright," said Shawn.
