Chapter 3: The Calm Before the Storm

The next morning I woke up before my alarm went off, anxious about what Dreykov's experiment could be. I went and showered and got ready for the day before sneaking out to go for a run to clear my thoughts. I just couldn't stop thinking about what the outcome of this experiment could be. If it was successful, I'll be more powerful than anyone according to Dreykov and Maxim. But if it was unsuccessful, I could get injured or even worse, die. I wanted to back out, but then they'd go for Nat, and that would be worse than me doing it myself. I had run about 2 miles before I got a phone call from Maxim, saying he needed to see me right away. I rushed back inside to see him waiting for me with some information on what was to happen later tonight.

Maxim: "Well you're up and at em early this morning aren't you?" I nodded in response, out of breath from sprinting back inside.

Maxim: "I won't take up too much of your time considering I will have most of it later tonight. I just wanted to give you the run-down of what the experiment specifically does. We want to make you unstoppable, we want to give you powers that have never been documented before. The ability to read minds, be able to manipulate physics at your will, and so on. Does this sound more appealing to you now that you are aware of what is going to happen?"

I was surprised that this is what they wanted to do with us, but I couldn't lie, I was very intrigued by this and was fascinated at the fact that I could have powers like this.

Y/N: "I'll be real with you dude, I'm a little apprehensive considering you two have never done this before. But, I am excited if this does work out, you better not be getting my hopes up for nothing." Maxim laughed at my statement, knowing that anyone would feel that way.

Maxim: "Well, I look forward to seeing you later so we can make history together. Have a good day dear."

Y/N: "You too."

I smirked, Maxim has always been my favorite. He's always been genuinely concerned with how people feel. Dreykov on the other hand isn't like how he used to be. He used to be just like Maxim, but it seems that Dreykov has been getting "power-hungry". I just brush that thought off my shoulder and go get ready for my training for the day. After training, Nat catches up with me, noticing I seem to be acting differently than normal.

Nat: "Hey Y/N, is everything okay? You seem to be on edge today?"

Y/N: "Huh..? Oh, yeah I'm fine. Just didn't get very much sleep last night." I lied through my teeth and I knew she knew that.

Nat: "Well okay, if something comes up you know I'm always here."

Y/N: "I know, thanks, Nat. Love you." I chimed with a smile. She smiled back and went up to shower and get ready for the rest of the day, I followed her up, waiting for her to finish her shower so I could take one too.

Later that night, around dinner time, I get a text from Dreykov saying they are ready for the experiment. This was the part of the day that I had been dreading, I needed to tell Nat what was about to happen. I went into her bedroom to see her sitting at her desk, writing something down in a notebook while Yelena was sitting in Nat's bed braiding her hair.

Y/N: "Nat.. there's something I need to tell you." I muttered hesitantly, knowing how pissed she was about to be.

Nat: "Y/N, what's going on?"

I could see how worried Nat looked which just made Yelena worry too, I knew I needed to tell them even though they wouldn't approve.

Y/N: "In about an hour, I'm going to be put through an experiment that Dreykov and Maxim have never done before. They said that I could get some sort of powers or something like that if all goes well. But, I'm not sure if it will." I stuttered looking down, afraid to see the look on her face.

Y/N: "And there's something else..." I looked up as the words had left my mouth and I could see Nat's eyebrows had furrowed up, not expecting what I was about to say. Yelena looked to me for reassurance, but I knew I couldn't give it to her.

Y/N: "I had overheard them discussing this experiment last night, and they originally wanted you to be put through it. I wasn't going to allow that because you've protected me through so much that I thought it was time that I protect you, especially with a highly dangerous experiment." She was death staring me at this point, I had a feeling she was about to rip me a new one.

Nat: "Are you fucking kidding me Y/N? You could get yourself killed!! Why would you do that?" Nat was furious, you could basically see the steam coming out of her ears.

Yelena: "Y/N, what were you thinking?"

Y/N: "Well, what was I supposed to do? Because I knew they were going to pick one of us and I didn't want it to be either one of you!" As mad as I knew they were, they couldn't help but be appreciative of what I did.

Yelena: "As much as I hate you right now, I appreciate you wanting to protect us."

Nat: "Okay, okay... Just promise me you will make it out alive, I don't know what I would do without you." She mumbled, trying to hold back her tears. Yelena nodded her head in agreement

Y/N: "I'll try my best sis." I cheered with a smile, hopeful that this will all go according to plan.

I then left Nat's room to give her and Yelena some time to process everything. I knew this would be just as hard on them as it has been on me. As Nat sat in her room, thinking of all the different scenarios of what could come about this, she burst into tears. Angry with Y/N for volunteering herself instead of letting her do it. Sad about the dangers that come with an experiment of this nature. Yelena went over to comfort her, but eventually, she gave in to the tears too. Why would Dreykov and Maxim want to put their students, basically their children, through such a dangerous procedure? That was all Nat and Yelena could think about.
