"I don't know what to do. I trusted Spottedleaf. She told me to follow my heart, but she knew Cinderpelt was going to die! How could she do that?" Leafpool hissed angrily.

"You did follow your heart," Crowfeather replied in a gentle meow. "Your heart told you to come home. You could never be happy away from your Clan."

"That's not true." Leafpool turned away. "Spottedleaf killed Cinderpelt."

Crowfeather jerked back sharply. "Leafpool," he pleaded, "you know that's not true. The badger killed Cinderpelt, not Spottedleaf."

"But Spottedleaf let it happen," Leafpool hissed. "I will kill her."

"Leafpool!" Crowfeather exclaimed in shock. "You aren't a murderer. You're a medicine cat, remember?" He watched as Leafpool slid out sharp claws, and winced. "It's against the medicine cat code."

"The code." Leafpool snorted. "Who cares about the code? My kits' very existence is against the code."

"Your kits?" Crowfeather asked sharply.

"Yes, my kits," Leafpool growled. If only Cinderpelt had lived... I would have her to consult. Where will my kits go now?

"Are they — mine?" Crowfeather whispered, in a strangled voice. "Ours?"

"Yes." Leafpool turned away. She could feel Crowfeather's gaze on the back of her head.

"When are they due?" Crowfeather asked.

Leafpool shrugged. "A moon, I'd say." She'd discovered it a half-moon earlier, and ever since she'd been struggling to hide it under the watchful eyes of Cinderpelt.

"A moon?" Crowfeather choked out. "Why didn't you say anything?"

Leafpool didn't reply. She was too busy thinking, gears turning in her head at the speed of lightning. I will make Spottedleaf pay. And what better way to do it... than to kill Firestar?

No, Leafpool replied in her head quickly, debunking the idea. He'll go to StarClan and Spottedleaf will be happy. Leafpool thought for a moment. I'll kill her myself, she thought. Then she won't ever see her dear Firestar again. And I'll make sure her death will be long and painful.

But how?

"Leafpool? Leafpool!" Crowfeather's voice brought her back to reality. He ran his tail along her spine comfortingly. "You're in shock, Leafpool. You should go to the medicine cat den and rest."

Leafpool flexed her claws. I will kill Spottedleaf. I will kill Spottedleaf. I will kill Spottedleaf. The chant calmed her, and she began to relax slightly. But it did not dim the mad glint in her leaf-green eyes that spoke of murder.
