This is pure agony, Leafpool thought. She gasped as pain like the scorching tongues of a flame seared through her. Biting down on her stick hard, she prepared herself for another wave of pain.
"One kit's out!" Squirrelflight meowed encouragingly. "It's a black she-kit."
My beautiful kit. Leafpool licked the top of the she-kit's head before another spasm crashed through her.
"Second kit," Squirrelflight reported. "A golden tom."
Leafpool watched as her sister pushed the tom-kit closer towards her. She licked his head fondly, before nudging him to her belly.
"The third kit's on its way," her sister announced, and Leafpool braced herself for another wave of agony. It came, but ended quicker than the others: the tom-kit tumbled out easily, smaller than either of his littermates.
"Am I done?" Leafpool croaked.
Squirrelflight shook her head. "Fourth kit on the way," she meowed.
Leafpool groaned. "Now I get why queens die at childbirth."
"Come on, Leafpool," Squirrelflight meowed encouragingly. "Just one more." A burst of pain crashed through her once more, and she bit down hard again.
"Something's wrong," Squirrelflight suddenly spoke, urgency in her voice. "The kit's stuck!"
"Push!" Leafpool called, but her voice was drowned out by the pain.
Suddenly, a flowery scent filled the hollow, and even Squirrelflight looked up. A dark tortoiseshell she-cat, her star-flecked pelt shimmering in the air, appeared in front of them. "Spottedleaf?" Leafpool whispered. I need to kill this cat! I need to avenge Cinderpelt!
With all her remaining strength, Leafpool staggered up. Kill Spottedleaf. Protect my kits. Kill Spottedleaf... The two goals in her mind somehow seemed to be intertwined.
"What are you doing?" Squirrelflight cried. "Leafpool?" But she paid her no notice. She pounced on Spottedleaf, praying her claws would hit their mark. Blood dripped to the ground.
Her last thought was, I will kill anything and anybody for my kits.
