Leafpool awoke to a new day in the medicine cat den. She looked beside her, half expecting Cinderpelt to be awake, already sorting herbs. Instead, there was a small mountain of herbs waiting for her to put her paws on. Leafpool hissed with anger.

Spottedleaf will pay. I'm making her pay.

Leafpool's paws worked briskly with the herbs, her moons of experience taking control. She didn't even notice when a ginger-and-white she-cat padded into the den.

"Leafpool?" Brightheart called, and Leafpool jerked back with surprise.

"Hi, Brightheart," Leafpool greeted the warrior. She remembered how Cinderpelt had sometimes made Brightheart work in the medicine den, and felt a rush of anger. Brightheart stole Cinderpelt from me, she thought. But she smiled at Brightheart. "Do you need anything?"

Brightheart shook her head. "No," she replied. "I'm here to offer condolences. You must be very sad after what happened to Cinderpelt."

Leafpool nodded mutely. I do feel sad, she replied inside her head. Sad enough that I'm willing to kill Spottedleaf.

"Do you want any help with sorting the herbs?" Brightheart offered. "I know my way around here."

"Because Cinderpelt taught you," Leafpool replied.

Brightheart nodded, mistaking Leafpool's intent to be grief for Cinderpelt. "But we can do it together. We're both in the same position, Cinderpelt's apprentices, in a way."

No, we're not, Leafpool replied silently. We're so different. What I will do will prove that more than ever.
