Leafpool did not want to go to the Moonpool meeting.
The other cats — Mothwing, Littlecloud, Barkface, even his apprentice, Kestrelpaw... they would surely question her bulging flanks. No, the half-moon meeting was out of the question. She'd been barely hiding it, and Brightheart and Ferncloud were constantly shooting her scrutinous looks. She didn't want to know how well she could hide it under the eyes of three experienced medicine cats.
But it's your only chance to kill Spottedleaf, a voice in her head argued.
"I'm not going," Leafpool said out loud.
Brightheart's face appeared in the entrance to the medicine den a heartbeat later, looking anxious. "What do you mean, Leafpool? You have to go. You're ThunderClan's only medicine cat!"
Leafpool twitched her tail irritably. "You can go, Brightheart. Tell them I'm still grieving Cinderpelt." And I am, in a way. This'll just buy me more time to plan on how to kill Spottedleaf.
Brightheart narrowed her eyes. "You're going to lie to the other medicine cats?"
"It's true," Leafpool protested.
"But it's not the only reason," Brightheart replied. "Are you expecting kits?"
Brightheart's question caught Leafpool by surprise. But she knew this moment would eventually have had to come.
Should I tell her, or not?
Leafpool decided to lie. "No," she snapped. "Why do you ask? Do you think I'm breaking the medicine cat code?"
"N-no," Brightheart replied, "but—"
"Then go," Leafpool interrupted. "They won't question it."
When Brightheart was gone, Leafpool sighed with relief, but that relief immediately turned into fear. What will I do when my kits come?
She was brooding this when Squirrelflight padded into the den. She looked at Leafpool carefully, then asked, "When are the kits due?"
"Kits?" Leafpool asked, feigning surprise.
Squirrelflight sighed. "You know what I'm talking about, Leafpool. Your kits. You're expecting kits."
"I'm not," Leafpool snapped.
"Yes, you are."
"No, I'm not."
"Yes, you are."
"No, I'm not."
"Leafpool," Squirrelflight meowed, "I know it's hard, but you can't change it."
Leafpool hissed at her sister. How dare she? Is she going to tell the whole Clan now?
Instead, Squirrelflight stared at her paws, declaring, "I'm coming with you."
"What?" Leafpool asked in surprise.
"You can say I'm the mother of the kits," Squirrelflight meowed simply.
Leafpool narrowed her eyes. Is this Squirrelflight's plot to steal my kits? Maybe she wanted kits all along. Maybe she's just manipulating me to get kits!
A burning, fierce love blossomed in Leafpool's heart. Squirrelflight will never take my kits, and I will kill her if I need to.
She didn't even flinch at the thought of killing her only sister.
