"Sarah? Violet?" Ward Cameron stepped out into his back yard, mud slushing around his boots.

"We're busy!" The two girls called in unison.

"What are you doing?"

"The burrows filled with water from the surge!" Sarah yelled, running off.

"The birds are having a field day!" Violet laughed as she chased after her best friend, swatting at the crows flying around them with her tennis racket.

Sarah's dad straightened up and glanced at the woman standing next to him. "The birds have to eat too, Sarah." Her dad sighed as he watched the two girls attempt to save the small creatures.

"No, it's a mouse genocide out here!"

"It's the cycle of life is what it is, girls. Now come on." Ward pleaded.

"I can't be a part of it," Sarah argued as Violet continued running around, "First they came for the mice-"

"Well I have an actual human being..."

"Oh my god!" Sarah stopped swinging her racket and moved towards the two adults.

"You might give some help to-"

She stepped forward and shook the woman's hand, not paying attention to her father. "I'm Sarah, I'm so sorry." The girl said, still regaining her breath.

"This is Lana, Scooter's wife." Her dad explained, gesturing his hand towards the dark-haired woman.

"How the fuck are there so many birds!" Violet yelled, tripping over a branch that had fallen the night before and landing face-down in the mud.

"Hey stupid!" Sarah yelled and her friend got up, adjusting her blue bikini top and turning around to see that someone else was there. She jogged over, smiling slightly and brushing the dirt off of her clothes but not missing the chance to glare at the other girl.

"You both were storm prepping with him right?" Violet looked over at Sarah, giving her a blank look that said 'I have no clue what he's talking about.'

"Yeah. He helped us latch the cabin on the Druthers." Still not comprehending the conversation, Violet began picking at the mangled bandana wrapped around the short handle of her racket.

"Well did he say where he was going?" Once the other woman spoke, Violet snapped back to reality━━realizing she missed more of what was being discussed. The urgency in Lana's voice told Violet that something was definitely wrong. "Did he get a phone call, or mention anything?"
