3 Days Later
"School. Mondays. Drama. Cheerleaders. Jocks. All the things I hate." Sam says with her arm around my shoulder. We got our schedules yesterday and let me tell you, fate is on our side. We have two classes together and lunch. We have first period together, so that's where we're going. "Well, some jocks are okay but some are just cocky jerks." She continues talking but I'm concentrated on getting the day over with. Like she said I hate Mondays, drama and cheerleaders. But the forget to mention one thing I hate. Mornings. I am not a morning person. I get annoyed really easy and everyone knows not to mess with Nikki before she has her hot chocolate.
Mmmmmm. Hot chocolate. I hate coffee and I know hot chocolate doesn't have caffeine but I don't need caffeine, I just need something warm to drink and I love chocolate.
"Earth to Nikki?" Sam is waving her hand in my face.
"Sorry, what?"
"Never mind, we're already in class."
"3 minutes left before class starts." The English teacher, Mr. Weston, says to the class.
"What's up with you lately? You've been zoning out a lot." Sam says
"Nothing. Nothing's wrong."
"Are you thinking about that guy? I don't know his name."
I look over to her, "His name is Duke and no. I'm not thinking about him." Well, I was trying not to but now I am. Thanks a lot Sam!, I want to say but don't.
"Well, I want to meet this 'Duke' guy." She emphasizes his name.
"Okay..." I extend the word.
We don't talk for the rest of the class period.
Class goes by faster than I thought it would. Mr. Weston gave us some papers and after that we we're on our way.
I know second period will suck because it's one of the classes that I don't have with Sam. It's weird without her. And it's even weirder that I have Spanish right after English class.
"Hola clase! Yo soy Señora García. Hello class. I am Ms. Garcia."
Right when she finishes her sentence, someone opens the door. I don't bother to look up because I'm just happy that no one sat next to me. I'm getting my notebook and pencil out so there's no reason why I should looking up anyway.
"You are late. You can sit right over there." Mrs. Garcia says to the student. I can hear the person is walking. Closer and closer to me. Then I feel her/him sit next to me.
"Hey Princess." Definitely a guy.
And that guy is Duke.
I look up really quickly and see Duke smiling at me. My eyes widen. His face is really close to mine. He is wearing a leather jacket with a gray v-neck shirt, dark blue jeans and a gray beanie over his brown curls.
"W-w-what? W-when? How?" I stutter so much I don't think he understood me. But he did.
"I will explain later." He pokes my nose and turns around to look at the teacher.
What just happened? What's going on?
"I'm going to pass out papers about this class." Her accent is so thick. "You and your parents are going to have to sign the papers." She starts passing them out. "We will be going on a few field trips this year. One or two per semester. Many will require that you pay for the trip and for the food."
Duke nudges my elbow, "Pssst. Psssst. Hey. Pssst." he tries to whisper.
"What." I whisper back to him.
