The Proposal

It was the thirty-fifth day when there was a knock on Michael’s door. A dark fat man was standing there with an evil glare in his eyes when he opened the door.

“Are you Michael who worked in the Royal Circus?” the man inquired.

Michael answered affirmatively.

“My name is Joseph. I work for an entertainment company that conducts private shows. We have a vacancy for a job. Would you be interested?”

Michael was surprised by this proposal.

“Actually our company was a stakeholder at the Royal Circus and we got your contact from there.”

Michael’s eyes glowed with hope in this crisis. It was like a dream come true for him.

“What is the job all about? Is it managerial?” Michael asked.

“To be honest, it isn’t managerial. But I can’t tell you more about the job description until you agree and sign the contract. Strict company policy, I’m afraid.” The man said sternly.

At first, Michael was quite critical about the whole scenario and soon confusion started hovering all over his face. On one hand, this was his only chance to salvage something in this time of crisis and on the other hand, he needed to know what he was up against. Clearly predicting Michael’s thoughts, Joseph said, “ One thing I can tell for sure. You don’t have to starve to death if you take this job. We would provide you with accommodation and a healthy lifestyle throughout your tenure. But once you leave the job, you would be devoid of all those facilities.”

“Can’t you tell me a little about the job?”, Michael asked.

“You have to eat and entertain people. It is just like a performance. That’s all I can say.”

Michael was still lost in his thoughts.

There was absolute silence in the room. Judging the situation, Joseph broke the silence.

“You don’t have to answer now. I will be back in a week and I’m leaving you with the contract containing all the terms and conditions. Just go through it.”

Stuck in this dilemma, a week passed and Joseph reappeared on Michael’s doorstep.

“So what have you decided? Will you take the job?” Joseph asked but Joseph already knew the answer.

“There’s no way I can pass on an opportunity like that. I will take the job.”, Michael answered.

With that, the contract was signed. But Michael never knew what he was signing up for, a nightmarish circumstance was waiting for him within the walls.
