It didn't take long for summer to roll around, and the heatwave had taken its toll on Faraway Town. Kel rolled around on the couch down the stairs, complaining about the heat to Hero while he worked on some summer vacation schoolwork.
"How can you stand to wear that?! It's so hot- I think my face is gonna melt off at this rate," Kel groaned into a pillow, kicking his feet into the cushions. Hero laughed at the antics, looking up from the pile of papers to see his brother's feet still flailing about.
"If you think this is so hot, what about Sunny? He's almost always wearing warm clothing. I'm only wearing a regular shirt and shorts, it's nothing compared to a sweater vest," Hero said. Kel's gasp made it hard for him not to burst into laughter, any pretense of complaining about the heat being dropped quickly. The quick sound of Kel running closer was shortly followed by his hand slamming on the table in quick succession.
"How the he-" Kel started to yell, stopping as Hero raised an eyebrow. Kel sighed before retrying the sentence. "How the heck does he do it?" Hero shrugged in his seat, turning back to his work. Kel grabbed Hero's shoulder and shook it, making more dramatic noises of distress until Hero finally put down his pencil.
"There are better ways to tell me you want to go see him, Kel," Hero muttered, getting out of his chair and pushing it in. Kel didn't seem perturbed by the words, running to grab his shoes already. Hero turned back to his homework, having a hard time focusing back on it.
He hadn't told anyone about what he and Basil had found in Sunny's house that day. He couldn't find the words to break the news to the others, so he'd held onto the added piece to the ever-growing mystery of what had happened. Even now, he had stored the pieces in his room, not wanting to give Sunny a chance to access them. He didn't have much time to think about it though as Kel came back quickly, tugging on his arm.
"C'monnnn, let's go!" Kel cheered, getting Hero to finally get out of his seat. Hero looked to see Kel already eyeing the door, pulling him in that direction. He groaned as he finally let himself get taken away from his work. The sunlight made him squint some and cover his face, taking in the sudden burst of heat on his skin somewhat poorly. He wasn't sure how Kel could keep up with it, but he didn't get the time to think as he was dragged along the hot pavement towards Sunny's home. All pretenses of actually dragging his older brother around were dropped as Kel rushed to the door, knocking and ringing the door far too many times. Eventually it creaked open, opening wider as Kel pushed himself inside. The chaotic noise of Kel made Hero chuckle to himself as he stood back, unsure of whether or not to join.
He eventually decided against joining in on the fun, walking back to the house. He could still hear Kel's rowdy voice coming from Sunny's house as he stood in his own driveway.
He had someone else to see.
------
"Not gonna lie, I didn't expect to see you here," Kel said as he walked the doorway to see Basil on his knees, the photo album splayed out on the ground with Sunny on his other side. The sudden noise made him look up quickly, only to smile at Kel.
"I have been coming over more often, but no one else is normally here when I do. I guess it's not much of a surprise, huh," Basil admitted, scooching back and leaving room for Kel to sit next to him. Kel quickly plopped onto the ground, leaning over the photo album and pointing at a picture of everyone's shoes in the frame, grinning from ear to ear.
"Hey, I remember this one! Right after this, didn't a stray cat almost steal your camera?" Kel asked, looking over at Basil who laughed nervously.
"It looked a lot like Mewo, except it had yellow eyes," Sunny stated quietly. Kel paused for a moment at the comment before tilting his head further to have Sunny's face more in view.
