Chapter Five

You didn't know how to love

And maybe that's exactly why 

You needed me as your soulmate.

It was almost 1 am. An hour had gone by since we ditched the bonfire. The four of us were back in Pope's backyard, sitting around a small fire we had just made. When we were leaving the bonfire earlier, Pope had shown us something he had found while sleuthing around the beach.

Pope- "What do you guys think it is?" He was inspecting it in his hands.

JJ- "Looks like a key."

Pope- "Yeah, but what do you think it's for?"

John B- "Where did you find it?"

Pope- "Well, when I was looking around the beach, I came across this line up of rocks, and as I was shining my light on them, this, like, glistened in the crevice of them." He held up the key to show us.

John B- "Do you think someone placed it there?"

Pope- "I don't know. Maybe." He turned it over to observe the odd markings on it.

John B- "Well, was there anything around it? A dock, house, boat?"

Pope- "Nothing."

JJ- "It might have something to do with the treasure."

Pope shot JJ a look. "That's what we're trying to figure out, Einstein."

JJ pursed his lips together, then opened his mouth in realization. "Oh..."

Pope held the key up above his head and squinted his eyes as if he was investigating the piece of metal. Then, suddenly, a female's voice entered behind us.

Sarah- "Hey, guys."

Once Pope saw Sarah, he scrambled to hide the key. I twisted my face in disgust when I saw that he had shoved it inside his mouth.

John B jumped up from his seat to acknowledge Sarah. "What are you doing here?"

Sarah- "I just came to see what you guys were doing."

Pope tried to speak with his mouth full, but all that came out were jumbled words that no one could understand. We all looked at him with befuddled looks on our faces, then John B started talking over him. 

John B- "How did you know where we were?"

Sarah- "Oh, I looked at Pope's Snapchat location."

John B- "You guys have each other on snap?"

Pope muttered some words that were still undetectable, then shrugged his shoulders.

Sarah- "He and I had a class together last year."

John B raised his eyebrows and nodded his head. "Oh..."

Sarah- "Anyway, I actually came over here to thank you." She turned to John B. "For sticking up for me." 

They exchanged a lingering look for a few seconds, then Sarah continued. "I also wanted to apologize for Topper and Rafe. They can be ... extreme assholes sometimes." 

JJ scoffed. "More like sociopathic."

Sarah- "I swear the both of them have way too much testosterone." She chuckled, and silence suddenly washed over us for a slight moment. "Anyway... that's all I wanted to say."

John B nodded and exchanged looks with each one of us.

Sarah swung her arms back and forth awkwardly, then took a step forward. "So... what are you guys doing?" She asked curiously.
