When I get to my dorm I collapse on my bed and squeal into my pillow. Once I’m done I look up to find two of my roommates staring at me with looks mixed with confusion, concern, and slight amusement.
The roommate closest to me, Emmeline, leans and places a hand on my forehead, “It doesn’t feel like a fever?”
Andi scoffs and turns back to her mirror where she was previously applying make-up, “We’ve known for a while that she was missing a couple of screws. What was it this time?”
I grab my giant mickey plush and squeeze him close to me, “I got asked out by the cutest guy I’ve ever met.”
Andi raises an eyebrow, “That’s it?”
“Aww, that’s so sweet! Tell me everything!” Emmie squeals, ignoring our other roommate’s sounds of disgust.
I pat a spot right next to my bed and take a deep breath before launching into a detailed retelling of this afternoon.
It’s 3:58 on the Saturday of Beckett and I’s movie date and I’m standing in front of our meet-up location waiting for my date. I shuffle on my feet for a while glancing around the parking lot again then sigh when I still can’t spot him. I turn to one of the glass windows and check my appearance for the hundredth time.
I’m tugging at my denim short overalls and orange graphic tee, wondering not for the first time if I should’ve gone with something different when I hear my name being called.
“Selene!” Beckett comes barrelling up the stairs, hand dropping to his knees as he attempts to catch his breath.
I stare, unsure what to do, “ Um hi.”
Suddenly he straightens, “I’m sorry!”
I blink wildly, confused by the sudden apology, “Why?”
“I’m late, aren’t I? Ugh, this is not the impression I wanted to make on our first date. You must think that I don’t care or I’m not interested but I am I promise I just lost track of time and-”
Beckett freezes the moment my fingers come in contact with his wrist, I catch his wide eyes with mine.
“Breath,” I instruct gently. Instantly all the air whooshes out of him before he takes a deep calming breath.
“Sorry.” Beckett’s eyes lower to the floor as a blush fills his cheeks. I ‘aww’ internally and subconsciously squeeze his wrist. When his eyes snap to mine I simply smile reassuringly before dropping my hand.
“We should probably get going now.”
“Right, uh this way.” Luckily for us there was barely any traffic so we were able to make up for lost time and got to the theatre with enough time to buy snacks.
We’re taking a stroll in a park near the cinema after the movie when I decide to confirm a suspicion that I’ve had since he first asked me out.
“You’re not a fan of horror movies are you?” I turn to him with a curious look as he momentarily freezes like a deer in headlights.
“Wha- what makes you think that?” I watch as he runs a hand through his hair, chuckling nervously.
A small smile makes its way across my face at the gesture, “Just a feeling. Am I wrong? I promise I won’t judge.”
He sighs defeated, “Yeah I’m not really a fan of stuff like that. I get scared way too easily.”
“But you still offered to see Anabelle with me because you heard I was a fan?”
