Lots of people in the world have pets. Some people consider their pets to be like family members. I, the author of this true story, have been brought up with dogs all my life. I was introduced to dogs a few years before I got my first dog, Princess. I was seven years old when we got princess. My family and I are no exception to claiming our pets as family members. We had a dog named Princess and I considered her to be my sister. We did not know anything about Princess's young puppy life. We sometimes would guess what happened during those months before we adopted/rescued her. One thing that I knew for sure was that she was the best dog my family and I could have had for our first dog.
On December 22,1994 we adopted her in Sanford, North Carolina and brought her home with us to Garner, North Carolina. That was one of those days in my life that I will never forget. More on that later. Princess was a small mixed-breed dog that weighed anywhere from 10 to 13 pounds when she was full grown. No one knew what kind of dog she really was. Lots of people would take guesses as to what she might have been mixed with. Some people thought she was long haired dachshund mix, others thought Pomeranian mix, still others thought other things.
I would take guesses myself. She had a long black muzzle and ears that fell over in such a way. My moms best friend and dog trainer was the one that found her for us. She thought that she might have had Tibetan Spaniel mixed in her because she looked very similar to that breed of dog. As I grew up with her I began studying about the different dog breeds. I began seeing her as a Tibetan Spaniel and Shetland sheepdog (Sheltie) mix. I learned so much about dogs that some people started calling me a walking talking dog encyclopedia.
When my family and I first heard about Princess, we found out that a person rescued the puppy soon to be named Princess and another little dog from an abandoned house. The person had brought these two puppies to a dog groomer in Sanford, North Carolina. This groomer called my mom's best friend Bonnie and told her about the two puppies. Bonnie called my mom because she knew that we were looking for a small dog/puppy. Jean, she said I think that I may have found the perfect puppy for your family. On December 17, 1994 my mom drove my dad and me to the dog training center to meet up with Bonnie. Bonnie drove the four of us to meet the puppies.
When we arrived at the dog groomers place in Sanford North Carolina, I was the first one in the door to see the puppies. I asked the groomer, where are the puppies? She points to the cage in the corner and said, " They are over there." I quickly hurried over to the cage that the groomer pointed to. I saw the puppy soon to be called Princess, sitting on a mat next to the other puppy. The moment the friendly little brindle-colored, black muzzle with black on the tips of her ears, and creamish-blonde on her chest, tail, and ears puppy saw me she put her front paws on the door of the cage. It was love at first sight, I knew at once that she was the puppy for me.
I also looked at the other black and white puppy that was next to her in the cage, and thought to myself, no thank you she is to shy for me, besides the other one is way friendlier. The groomer brought out the two puppies from the cage for my family and I to meet and interact with. She then told us that the other puppy already had been adopted and was going to Florida in a couple of days. After I heard those words I was relieved that the black and white puppy had already found a home. The groomer then put up the black and white puppy so that my family and I could visit with the other puppy. Just then little puppy licked my face.
That day my parents and I discussed whether or not this was the puppy for us. They agreed that it was and told the groomer that we wanted the friendly little brindle-colored puppy. The Groomer then told us that we could not take the puppy home that day, but if we could come back in five days which would be December 22,1994, the puppy would be ready to go home. She then offered to put ribbons in her ears. I told her that I wanted ribbons in the puppy's ears. The groomer then asked me what color ribbons did I want her to have.
When I was seven years old my favorite color was purple so I asked her if she had purple ribbons. "I have dark purple and light purple ribbons which would you like," she asks. She showed me the two shades and I pointed to the dark purple ribbons. "The dark purple would look a lot better on her ears,"she says, so we agreed on the dark shade of purple ribbons for the puppy's ears.
I remember asking the groomer if the puppy had a name. She told me that from what she knew of, the puppy did not have a name, and that we could name the puppy any name we wanted. My parents suggested that I should name her. I thought back to when I first saw her. I thought that she deserved to have a royal name, and then it hit me! She reminded me of a Princess sitting on a thrown.I told my parents the name I had chosen. "Her name will be Princess," I said. That sounds like a perfect name for her, everyone in the room said to me. So we all agree, her name will be Princess. Before we left I gave her a hug and a kiss and Princess gave me a kiss back.
So the name of the puppy has been decided. Wonder what will happened next to the little girl and her new puppy after the five days are up. Find out in the next chapter. Chapter 2: Puppy Love.
