Chapter Five - I got you
Dean marched around the empty, desperately searching for Castiel. Now that he knew that he could fall asleep again, and possibly have to see another future without his angel, he was even more worried and panicked. He kept touching the bloody handprint Cas had left on his shoulder, praying to him to give him a sign, to show him where he was.
Apparently, the seventh time was the charm, because, finally, Dean caught sight of a dark-haired vessel. He ran towards them and when he looked at them, he saw a woman. Hopes crashing, he stayed a little longer, hoping that his heart would stop hurting. Suddenly, the face shifted into the familiar one Dean knew. The one he loved.
"Cas," he sobbed, voice cracking. He ran towards the angel and collapsed beside him. He touched Cas' face to make sure he was real and when his hand met the angel's skin he let out a sigh of relief. "I found you. I got you." He wiped away tears that were rolling down Cas' face and let a hand linger on his face. "Cas," he said, shaking the angel gently. "Cas, wake up." But Cas kept his eyes closed. Dean could feel the need to sleep begin to drag him in, so he knew he had to move quickly.
Dean shifted Cas to the edge of the bed he was on and put an arm around his own shoulders. He knew he couldn't carry Cas, so he opted on gently dragging him around. Much like what the angel had done for the hunter earlier. It seemed an eternity away, yet it was only moments before Cas got pulled into the Empty.
Once he got Cas balanced, it hit him that he had no idea on how to get out of the Empty. Angels had pulled him out of Hell and Heaven, and Benny had told him how to get out of Purgatory. The only thing he could think of was asking the Empty to let them go. "Empty," he called out. Nothing- no response. He sat down on the bed in Castiel's cell. The angel sat with him since he was being supported by the hunter. Dean looked at Cas to see if he was still knocked out. "Yep, still out." Dean sighed, Cas looked like he was in pain and Dean knew that he was probably seeing either a horrible memory or a horrible future.
Dean balanced Cas on his shoulder and grabbed the knife that Cas had used earlier to paint the warding against Billie. He cut into his palm and let the blood fall onto the floor. He quickly put the knife away and gripped the angel tight.
"Ugh, what do you want?" The Empty groaned. It looked at Dean and then shifted its gaze to Cas. "Looks like you found the angel." It said with raised eyebrows. "So why are you bleeding all over the place?"
"Get us out," Dean asked, holding Cas close to his side. "Please."
"Why," it walked around them, twirling Meg's blonde hair. "Would I do that?"
"To sleep," he tried to plead.
"I told you, find the angel, get out, you can keep him. Why would I help you out? Besides, how can you guarantee I wouldn't just throw you out and keep the angel?"
"Because I can always find a way back inside, and I will if you don't let him go," Dean begged. "Please, let us go."
"Ah!" It clutched its head. "He sent more." It groaned in pain and looked at Dean. "You're planning on fighting God?" Dean looked at the Meg look-a-like and nodded. "I'll let you both out if you promise something."
"Yes, anything," Dean said after hearing that the Empty had said both.
"Don't kill God. Do whatever the hell you want to stop him, and you have to stop him from what he's doing, but don't kill him. You kill him and I will have to deal with him forever and I don't want that so don't kill him. Promise?"
Dean thought about it. Save Cas and not kill Chuck or leave the love of his life and gank a jerk. It was an easy choice. "I promise." They could always find another way to stop Chuck that didn't involve killing him.
"You break that promise and I'll make your demon friend's life much, much, worse." It waited until Dean nodded in understanding and then looked satisfied. "Fine, enjoy Earth."
Dean blinked and found himself back in the dungeon. He looked down and found the angel falling into his lap. Cas was still asleep and Dean clutched him tight, making sure that he was real. He brushed hair away from Cas' forehead and kissed the angel's temple lightly. "I got you, Cas, I got you. I got you." He reassured himself.
He leaned back against the wall and pulled Cas closer. He looked around the room and saw his phone near him. He reached for it and saw dozens of missed calls from Sam and a couple of texts from him and Jack. Dean checked the time. We've been gone a few hours. Sam and Jack must have been really worried.
"Dean?" he heard a worried voice say.
"Hey, Jack." Dean replied, looking at the angel in his lap.
"Sam! It's Dean!" Jack called out. Dean brushed a hair falling onto Cas' face off.
"Dean!" Sam called out.
"Hey, Sammy," he said quietly. He heard a small sigh of relief on the other side of the phone.
"It's not Billie," Sam told him. "It's Chuck. Everyone is gone, even Donna. I was worried he took you too-"
"What?" Dean asked, confused. It then hit him what had happened before the Empty took Cas and before Cas had confessed. They thought Billie was making everyone disappear. "Oh, right. Yeah, Billie told us."
"Is she dead?" Sam asked. Dean looked back at Castiel, who was still unconscious.
"Yeah, she's dead," he replied.
"Are you and Cas okay? Why did you take so long to call me back?"
"...I don't know. A lot happened, Sammy, I'll tell you both when I see you."
"Wait, are you and Cas okay?" Jack asked, worried about his father figures.
"I think so..." Dean said unsurely. "I'm not sure, Jack. I'll explain when I see you guys."
"Okay... I'll see you guys soon then." Jack said worried. Dean felt a pang of hurt hit him, losing Jack in the dream was a horrible feeling and it hit Dean like a sledgehammer on how badly he had treated Jack in the past. He made a mental note to apologise to him in person.
"See you two," Sam said. "Dean, I'll text you where to meet us." Sam hung up and Dean opened his messages and saw where Sam wanted him to go. It wasn't too far from the Bunker. Sam and Jack probably had to go farther. He wanted to wait for Cas to wake up so he could make sure he was okay. Ten minutes, he told himself. Then we have to leave.
A few minutes later, he felt the angel shift in his lap. "Dean?" Cas groaned.
"Hi, Cas," Dean said, relieved. Cas got up and Dean supported his back. Cas looked at Dean unsure.
"How do I know this is real?" Cas whispered, voice breaking and eyes watering. Dean's heart broke and he knew his angel must have seen a horrible future. Dean grabbed Cas' hand and pressed the wound from making the sigil against Billie. Cas winced.
"That's how."
"But how?" Dean bit his lip, knowing that the answer would make Cas upset. He brushed a hair off of Cas' face, but the angel pulled away slightly.
"I went in after you. Into the Empty," Dean answered quickly. "I told the Empty that if it didn't give you back, I would keep coming and annoy it for the rest of eternity. It gave you back for the promise that we wouldn't kill Chuck. That we find another way to stop him."
"Dean!" Cas yelled. "That was so stupid! How could you just jump into the Empty? It could have killed you! How could you be so stupid! I cannot believe you would do something so recklessly irresponsible! What about Sam? And Jack? Why the hell would you go in there for me? Why-"
"Because I love you too, you idiot!"
