SEÑORA ORTEGA'S POINT OF VIEW

"Are you ready for school, Carmen?"

"Sí, Mamá," my little five year old daughter responded timidly.

"Okay, mija, vamonos," I said to her, smiling.

She picked up her pink, little backpack and I took her tiny hand in mine. We walked out into the cool air and I locked the door. I walked her to the car and picked her up to put her in the car seat. Her little pigtails flopped around as I put her belt on and shut the door. I went to the driver's seat and started the car. As I pulled out of the driveway, I thought about today. Today, my daughter starts her life. I was oblivious to all life around me, only thinking about my little Carmen. My thoughts blurred the trip to the school, and we pulled into the school parking lot. I got out of the car.

"Mamá, I'm scared," Carmen said to me. "Tengo miedo."

"Carmen, everything will be alright. I promise you." I said, poking her nose.

She nodded and smiled at me with her cute little baby teeth. Ay, this will be difficult. I walked her into the school as she gripped my hand tightly. I asked where to find her classroom, and led her there. When we walked in, there were a bunch of adults with their little ones by their sides.

"Victoria Ortega," A voice called from behind me.

"Isabel Iglesias!" I repsonded with enthusiasm.

Isabel was my good friend throughout college, but I hadn't seen her for at least 10 years. I looked down and saw her little son.

"Hello, there," I said to him.

"Hola," He said to me. "I'm Enrique."

I looked down at Carmen, eager to help her make her first friend. She was hiding behind my leg. She looked at Enrique, up at me, and then back at him.  I gave her a soft push forward, and she stumbled forward a bit. She was always a shy one.

"I'm Carmen..." She said hesitantly, barely audible.

Enrique held his hand forward proudly and they shook.

"Hiya, Carmen," He said to her.

They ran off to play before class officially started. I reverted my attention to Isabel.

"Enrique is a nice little boy," I said to her.

"Carmen is a beautiful little girl," She said back to me, smiling.

"Do you think that..." I started.

"...They'll be good friends like we are?" She finished.

I was doubtful, but I was happy that I had at least gotten Carmen started off on the right foot on her first day.
