"The monsters of our childhood do not fade away, neither are they ever wholly monstrous."
‒ John Le Carre.
The blonde vampire gripped his scarf firmly, knuckles turning white. Burrowing his nose between the folds, he not only concealed his nose, saving it from the ambush of the strong smells of the market, but hid his scowl as well.
He should have expected it, after all, he was trailing after another creature.
He thought he had been careful, Katsuki knew for sure that when he walked, no sound came out from it and with all the additional noise that embraced the town at daylight, it should have been impossible for the red-haired boy to know that someone was following him.
But apparently, he had been wrong.
He had been trying to strike a conversation with the other boy for quite some time now, but to do that, Katsuki needed to actually approach him and the other creature was proving to be like an eel, slippery.
It didn't matter how he timed his approach or how fast he were to be, when he reached the spot where the other boy had been standing, only a trail of dust would remain. As if he had vanished into thin air.
It was frustrating, but Katsuki also felt kind of proud; too many creatures had been killed by the hands of commoners due to their lack of self-preservation, and watching this creature avoid his attempts at communicating was somewhat refreshing if also infuriating.
[Thought it had been quite some decades since he had seen another soul and that was why, maybe, he felt so elated.]
That day, the creature had decided to lure him to the market, where all the different smells had overwhelmed him to the point of being forced to use his inhuman speed to take refuge in his house.
Truth be told, it had been a great strategy, even if Katsuki wanted nothing more than to scratch his nose form the inside out. The strong stench of garlic had awakened in him a sneezing fit and even an hour later, the blonde could still feel the itchiness in his nose, making his eyes water.
It was not like the garlic was deadly to him, it was a hoax created over time due to the fact that vampires did go out of their way to avoid it; but there were many others foods that could make his nose itch, like peppers.
[In fact, it had been quite the shock for him to discover that he was no longer able to enjoy spicy foods, his favorite when he had been human.]
His frown deepened; he had tried everything he could think of to get close to the boy from who he had yet to get a name and he was running out of ideas. The boy was the sunshine of the town, one wrong move and he would have every human there coming after him; he had already caught a few nasty glares directed his way.
Which meant he was getting sloppy, if even the townsfolk were catching up to his interest in the red-haired boy, it was no wonder that the creature was steering clear of him.
Now, as he reached his house, he couldn't help but to curse himself. His nose was out of commission for a few days, which meant that he would have to be cooped up sniffing the freesia flowers that he always kept fresh in his house for similar situations, and he hated losing time like that.
As he clutched the bowl of crushed petals in his hands, his mind wandered. Many creatures had sensitive noses but it was an open secret that the most stricken by it were vampires, did that mean that the other boy was aware of his nature? Did he think that Katsuki would bite him? Katsuki would never try to feed of another creature without their consent, he would never try to hurt another creature, it was obvious.
