ELISE MEYER was watching a movie when 'it' happened. Now, what exactly happened? Basically a big purple guy came to Earth, got 6 colorful rocks, snapped his fingers, and dusted away 50% of the population. Crazy, right?
Elise was just 11 years old when that happened. She was having the time of her life one moment, and the next. Her mom dusted away. Left. If you would like to say that instead.
It was just her father and her. Alone. Her father, Frank, was technically still married to her for 4 years. Until he filed a divorce like she had died. That's possible...right?
5 YEARS LATER...
ELISE WAS home alone. Her father was out on a date. He was finally trying to move on after 5 years. He had lost hope of Elise's mother coming back.
Elise couldn't express how much she missed her mother. If she ever came back she would see her 16 year old daughter. Not her 11 year old. She was on a face-time call with her best friend, Brad, when the unthinkable happened.
"I'm pretty sure I failed that math test." Elise said as she made cookies. "I didn't understand a single thing on that paper."
"If it makes you feel better, I didn't even get to finish the test. She thought I was cheating and took my paper away." Brad laughed.
"What?" Elise chuckled. "Why would she think that."
"I'm not sure. Her pregnancy hormones must be getting to her."
"Wait...she's pregnant?! I just thought she gained some weight!"
"How could you be so clueless!" Brad laughed. "At least the school year is almost over and we can go on that trip next year! That's next year, right?"
Suddenly, Elise heard a laugh from the front door.
"I was at the cinema and didn't see you." A female voice called out. "I had to ask a stranger what happened and he told me half of the population was dusted!" Elise heard a pause. "Oh my, God. What if they moved and I'm at the wrong house!"
"One second Brad." She told her best friend. He nodded in understanding. Elise shuffled to the front door and slowly opened it.
It was her mother. Elise froze. She didn't know what to say or do. Clearly, her mother did as she was engulfed into a hug.
"Where's your father?" She heard her mother mumble.
"He's on a date." Elise replied, still a little shocked.
"A date? He's on a date?!"
"Yeah...um, it's been five years. He filed a divorce like you were dead and he just recently has been trying to move on." She explained as she backed away from her mom.
"I-It's been five years..?" Her mother asked. Elise nodded. She went over to her phone and saw Brad patiently waiting.
"I'll have to call you back." She stated as she hung up the phone call.
