Over the years I marked the path to the city in case my dumbass forgot my compass. Also it's useful when it gets dark out. I love nature and all but the one thing I can never get over is the spiders. Ugh. Why do such vile creatures exist?
The birds are relaying a song of sorts that brings a smile to my face. The forest is quite peaceful. The zombies are usually in more densely populated areas like the city. Sometimes they find their way over here though. Which sucks cause I just want to walk peacefully without the smell of rotten flesh. That's one thing the movies never mentioned, the smell. It's god awful. I've thrown up several times because of it. Imagine having a bunch of rotten carcasses covered in feces and garbage. Like that but worse. Sorry for the visual but now you feel my pain!
I reach the fork in the path. I venture to the right towards the lake. The detour is worth it after walking for three hours. I mean would you rather sleep by a river or in the middle of the woods? That's what I thought.
I set up camp on the rocks outlining the river. I like how calm and peaceful it is here. I add water into my bottle and add a disinfecting tablet to it. I also have a survival straw that filters water but I left it at home. Safety tip #1 is to always drink clean water since all the doctors are dead.
I eat some trail mix that I made at home and jerky. I drain it all down with my purified water. I look at way the light looks as it retreats back into the abyss. I decide to get some shut eye.

I awoke to find a fox sniffing me. I give it some jerky and it snuggled up next to me. I guess I have a pet fox now. I'll think of a name later.
I eat and pack up my stuff. Honor (my fox) follows me. We follow the trail for several hours. We stop for lunch and I start training Honor. I think it's a girl but I'm not sure.
A couple hours later and we reach the clearing. Finally crossing the field towards my old school. I go through the hole in the fence and head inside. The place is trashed. Windows smashed and dried blood everywhere. Dents in lockers and cracks in the tiles. I head towards my old locker. I open it and grab a pack of jerky (much to honors delight). I feed my pet and map out my route on the map of the city I store in my locker. I grab my mask to cover the stench of the undead.
I head out and find my bike. I ride for about 5 miles through neighborhoods. I avoid busier routes as there are often more zombies there.
This is it. The city.
