Steve Rogers was the kind of man you wanted to spend the rest of your life with. He was sweet. He was kind. He loved you. You had been so sure of that. From the day he met you, it seemed like he adored you. You could still the little flustered blond coming up to you in the library, clutching his textbooks so tightly his knuckles were white, stammering over his sentence as he asked if he could study with you. He was in your Introduction to Cultural Anthropology class, he explained, and he sits behind you, and he wasn't sure he was grasping the concepts, and he saw that you were flying by with ease, and he just wanted to know— You had to throw a pencil at him to get him to shut up long enough to say that he could absolutely be your study buddy. And his pretty face burned pink, you decided you would keep him around for as long as he would let you.

It took one whole semester of studying every single day together for him to muster up the courage to ask you out. It was right after your Cultural Anthropology final, yours and his last final of the semester. He was walking you back to your dorm when he blurted out, "Do you wanna go for dinner?"

"Oh, I was just gonna heat up some left over pizza—"

"No, like...Do you wanna go for dinner?"

You stared at him, trying to figure out what he was asking. Steve, sweet Steve. Always a bit too unsure about the romance department, you realized. "I would love to go on a date with you."

His pretty blue eyes lit up. "Yeah? You, uh, wanna go to that new Indian place that just opened up?"

"Baby boy, I'd go anywhere you ask me to."

And you had meant it. You were more naïve back then. Believed that people said the things that they truly meant. You hadn't yet had your first big heartbreak. Sure, you'd dated before and gone through heartache before, but it was never anything that absolutely shook your fucking core, made you desperate for a chance to do it all over again, to just be able to relive the good times one last time.

Steve changed that.

And damn him for that.

Because he'd already had his first heart break, his "one that got away". Peggy Carter, her name was. Her and Steve were best friends in high school, he'd told you as the two of you were stargazing on the roof of the library. They dated all throughout junior and senior year, but the day after graduation, she broke up with him. Had to go to England, something about the scholarship she'd gotten for the university she'd be attending in the fall. Didn't want to do long distance, she'd said. He swore he thought she took his heart with her—until he met you.
