A first look. It had been Peggy's idea, to get rid of the wedding day jitters. See each other on their own for the first time, let each other have their emotional moment together in privacy (save for the photographer who'd capture the moment). But now, as Steve stood with his back to the door, he decided there was no worse of an idea than this. How would he explain to Peggy how his nose was broke? He couldn't tell the truth. He knew that much. She'd never forgive him. He didn't deserve forgiveness, if he was being honest. But Steve wasn't the honest man everyone thought him to be. At least, not to the extent they all thought.

He felt a tap on his shoulder. It was time.

Slowly, he turned, trying to focus on the beautiful bride in front of him. But Peggy wasn't you. And, as her face morphed into one of horror, he realized that this was what he deserved. A life of loss. Peggy should leave him.

"What the hell happened to you?" she asked, reaching out, tenderly touching his already bruising face.

"I—" He froze. Shit, what could he say? But his mouth was moving faster than his brain. He was saying all the wrong things. "It was Y/N. She was a woman gone mad. She tracked me down and yelled and yelled and yelled about how I shouldn't be with you, that I was hers. And when I said that I didn't love her, she hit me."

"That bitch!"

No, you weren't a bitch. If anyone was, it was him. But he couldn't stop. "I'm so sorry, Peg. I know this isn't how you imagined—"

"I don't care if you're a little busted up," she said, leaning up and pressing a soft kiss near his bruised skin. "I do care that your ex was crazy enough to do this, though. Did you press charges?"

"No, no. I don't...I don't want this to be a whole thing. Bucky said she was just all bent out of shape because of the wedding, you know. She still thinks...I guess she just saw you living the life she wanted, and she snapped."

God, Steve, just shut the fuck up.

"Steve—"

"Please, I don't want her to ruin this day anymore than she already has. This is our day."

But it should've been your day.

Perhaps that why he had pushed so hard to get married at the orchard. Peggy had wanted a church wedding, but Steve had insisted that the orchard would be so much better. Because it would've been, had you been the bride he saw walking down the aisle. But he ruined it, and there was no one to blame but himself.
