[ Chapter notes: TFATWS 1x06]

He was so focused on her. That's why it happened. So homed in on the desire to make the day not crap, particularly after seeing the look on her face when he produced the letter... he had to suggest something. Felt it in every fibre of his being that he was responsible for that look and needed to do his best to keep it from surfacing again.

He understands the need for distraction. So very well.

That and trying to figure out what it is about Heida that seems so familiar to him.

It comes to him as they're heading out: the little old lady that kept shoving food at him in the building he was hiding out in when Steve found him. Before everything went a little nuts. Before Zemo rooted around in his head and summoned The Soldier. When he was still doing his best to make it to the next day and keep his distance from – well – everyone.

Hopefully she's ok.

"Here. Try this. You'll like eet."

Bucky blinks at her, barely catching the dish that she shoves at him. He's – he's trying his hardest to stay hidden, stay apart, stay safe and she's... just going to stand there till he... fine. He mumbles a quiet thanks, half-glaring-at, half-astonished-at the sudden armload of food. It's still hot enough to be felt through the sleeve of his jacket. He blinks up from the dish to lock his gaze on her, trying to rearrange his face and not succeeding so very much. There's accusation in his expression, and astonishment, even as he aims for something darker. He's a single, slightly burly dude. Why does she keep shoving food at him? She's lucky he's got enhanced reflexes, or he would have dropped and broken the dish!

She smirks back at him, smiling up into his face. "Not so scary as you want others to think, are you."

That makes him frown. How can he fix this and keep her safe from whomever will come looking. Cause they will. Come looking. "I..."

"Plums help the headaches?"

He heaves a slow, weary, sigh. Dark looks won't do it. She appears immune.

"Yes?"

She expects an answer from him. A mute nod will not suffice. "Yes. Yes ma'am. They did."
