[ TFATWS 1x06 - timeline departure to give us a little more time to experience those events ]
He'd remained on the sidewalk looking up at the building for longer than he'd like, after taking so long to even work his way to the correct city block. Now it's just a short walk down the hall, sunlight no longer helping to brighten the hallway. All day. It had taken all day for Sam's words to stop cycling in his head and result in the one thing he'd left his apartment with the intention of doing today. He meant to get it done sooner. Return home sooner. But his heart, mind, feet were all at war with one another. Now there's only – the door before him. The man he owes answers.
He's greeted with confusion, and a friendliness that won't last much longer. Not once he reveals what he knows. What he's done. "I – uh. I have to tell you something." He almost chokes as he inhales, struggling to get this truth revealed. Closure is owed. "A-about your son. He was murdered."
"What?"
Shock. More confusion piled on to this unscheduled evening visit. Because how could he know. How could he possibly know.
"By the Winter Soldier." There. The Truth is out there. But that's not all of it. His voice shakes as he lands the final blow. "And that. Was me."---
They're your friends and believe in you. They want to be there for you, even if it's impractical. Friends. Acquaintances. New people in your life that care. However you want to frame it, they're also Avengers. They have a job that demands their attention – battles to fight, people to save. Not that you've voiced those thoughts, not so soon after their offer to hang around the building if you want company. It helps to know that they want to be around, demands of the job be damned.
Sam stays long enough to help with kitchen cleanup after breakfast. The obligations of the new mantle beckon, persistently buzzing as bacon and sausages sizzled. He claimed he wanted to be home by the end of the day, too, sleep in his own bed, but if the activity on his phone was any indication The Powers That Be had other plans. You don't get the chance to ask where he's staying, but then it's not like Bucky's got any additional space to put Sam up. That question sidles up to the queue and slides into place alongside why Sam's phone was buzzing pretty much from the moment he walked in the door, but Bucky's remained silent.
