I get the feeling my mind likes playing tricks on me.

At times I felt confident in my own skin and nothing about me seemed remotely wrong. Then I'd over analyze myself in the smallest of situations like this one.

The way Zach was looking at me didn't go unnoticed. I was sure this was just a lapse of judgement on his part. His eyes flickered down to my lips for a moment too long, which caused my breathing to stop for half a second. Maybe more because of our close proximity.

He looked in my eyes for reassurance but he wasn't receiving any, which caused him to slightly retract.

Now that my brain was registering what was clearly about to happen every single thought in my mind told me none of this was right. He knew it too. It was bad timing for us both.

Now that I think about it I don't think the timing would ever be right.

I couldn't look past the fact that he shared the same blood as Kelsey. Although it wasn't his fault she made me hate parts of myself I used to adore. What's stopping him from doing the same. At one point Kelsey was one of my closest friends even if I'm too proud to admit it. I won't fall for it again.

"I-can't— I mean we can't." I finally whisper, meeting his gaze. I try to sound sure of myself but he can see through my struggle.

"Can't what? I'm going to need you to say it, Winters."

His hand swipes the untamed curls from my face and wraps it around the base of my neck. He's rough with his hands, letting me know who's exactly in charge. I'm forced to look into his eyes this time.

A swirl of emotions live inside them, none which I can determine as hate. They resembled lust. It was easy to notice when almost every guy that tried to make a move on me had looked the exact way. But something inside me told me this was different.

I just wanted to know how different.

"Screw this," I mutter, leaning forward. Our lips hover over each other seamlessly, I swear they touched.

"Hey you guys forgot the prize and I saw you both walk...in here." Hassan says holding up a carnival bag. He immediately stops in his tracks once he's aware of what he might've just interrupted.

I immediately take the largest step known to man back. The warmth I felt a second ago leaves me almost instantly and Zach tries to catch my eyes but I avoid them completely. I don't miss the frown forming at his lips by my actions.

"No, no. Please don't stop on my account." Hassan smirks, giving me a what the fudge look.

"We were just about to leave." I wrap my arms around my body suddenly feeling insecure at this very awkward moment.

"Well Zach here's the prize you requested. All wrapped up for who-"

"I got it, thanks." He grunted while taking it from Hassan who didn't seem fazed by his actions.
