ALEX
Blue
The color of the sky, which symbolizes infinity. The color of the ocean, that stands for depth. And the color of flame, that births light. Blue reflects the world, no doubt, and it started to reflect mine when my sliver cloud-like orbs found her blue sky-like orbs for the first time. The world ceased to exist and time ceased to move. A wave of current tingled through my body when I set my eyes upon those sapphires.
I was a vagrant piece of cloud that sought shelter in her mesmerizing eyes.
And today I felt the same wave of current flowing up and down my spine when I found her standing by the foot of the stairs. I watched her, transfixed. She was donning a knee-length dress, clad in my favorite color. Blue.
Everything paled in that instance. Nothing mattered anymore. Not the world, not the people, and certainly not me. The only thing that mattered was her and her blue eyes that had taken me a prisoner yet again. God, they didn't even know the power they held.
Moments passed but none of us averted our gaze. Did she miss me too? I needed her to come closer so that I could steal a whiff of her lavender scent. I missed that too. Much to my disappointment, she remained rooted to her spot. My feet itched to close the distance between us.
I blinked away when Mom pulled me in for a hug. I hugged her back with a warm big smile. My gaze whipped back only to see her retreating back. The disturbing memories of that night rushed back to me. Her puffy eyes, grief-filled sobs, and desperation in her voice. They had been haunting me since that night. My heart contorted painfully as I saw her walking away from me and that was the moment I realized I can never ever let her go.
I saw the slight redness in her eyes and on tip of her nose when she returned with Mom, carrying a chocolate cake in her hand. She regarded dad with a small smile while placing the cake on the table. I waited for her to flick her gaze on me but it never happened. So she was ignoring me. I felt irritation flicker inside me. There she was avoiding me at all cost and here I was having a tough time keeping my eyes off her.
I watched her guiding Mom to the table and making her stand next to dad. My heart fluttered on seeing her so involved with my family. Without my knowing, my feet carried me towards her. I noticed how her back stiffened when she sensed me approaching her. Was she nervous or reluctant to have me near her? The last thought didn't sit well with me. I was craving for her attention, like a teenage boy and so halted only when I was standing next to her. A sense of calmness washed over me when I breathed in her sweet scent. Lavender. Pure bliss.
Mom shoved the first piece of cake into dad's mouth and then the second into Crystal's. I came third. I didn't miss the glare Mom gave me when she brought the cake near my mouth. She was upset over Crystal and my fallout. I was pretty much sure that she hadn't told them about that girl and me. They wouldn't have let me into the house if they knew.
Crystal excused herself and went inside the kitchen whereas Mom lectured me for failing miserably as a husband.
A few minutes later she came back. My eyes of their own volition settled on her face. She had her eyes on me too. But this time she averted her gaze instantly.
"The table is set. Let's eat," she said without looking my way. I clenched my jaw in irritation. Her indifference was unnerving me. Mom and dad followed her and so did I.
It didn't skip my notice how her shoulders went rigid when I slid into the chair next to her. Mom and Dad were sitting across from us.
Silence fell over the air as we started eating.
"Save some space. I've made something special for dessert," Crystal broke the silence. Dad's eyes gleamed with joy as soon as her words fell in his ear.
