*Two Days Later*
I haven't spoken to Jaxon since the party. I sent him a "good morning" and a "good night" text yesterday, which he didn't respond to. To be frank, I don't really want to speak to him either, especially not after what happened that night at Melissa's. But, we need to talk about this, we'll, I need to talk about this because. . . . I'm calling off our engagement. I realized that I don't love Jaxon. I love Melissa. I really, really love her. Getting married to Jaxon will be impossible if my heart wants Melissa instead, so I need to break up with him. It needs to be done today.
So when my phone rings and the caller ID says baby boo bear, I practically faint. Actually, I do faint. My small body hits the floor with a thud. And this time, it's my uncle that comes stomping up the stairs and bursting into my room.
"Y/N! YOU LITTLE SLUT! STOP MAKING SO MUCH NOISE! YOUR AUNT AND I ARE TRYING TO WATCH FAMILY FEUD!" he roars.
"I-I-I wasn't d-doing-"
"YOU'RE OUT OF THE HOUSE!"
"W-w-w-w-w-what?" I choke down a sob.
"YOU'RE OUT OF THE HOUSE! PACK ALL YOUR THINGS!"
A tearful gasp escapes me as the door slams shut. Whatever. "You're out of the house" my ass. I'm a minor, he can't do that.
I missed Jaxon's call. He didn't leave a voicemail, but he should still be on his phone so I try to call him back.
"Hello?" a deep says into my ear.
"Jaxon."
"Y/N. . . . I have to tell you something."
"I have to tell you something too."
"Okay. Let's meet at Grosjer Park in 15 minutes. Sound good?"
I agree and hang up the phone. My skateboard got snapped in half by the popular girls the other day ("you don't even deserve to have a way of transportation!" they yelled.), so I'll have to walk there. Better leave now. First, I need to change into something more presentable.
***
Jaxon's car is parked in the small lot next to the park. He's leaning against a tree near the kids playground, something between his teeth. As I get closer I realize it's a blunt — he's smoking weed. Gross, I think. but it is what bad boys do. And Jaxon's a bad boy. He waves at me. I wave back.
"Hi." I say.
"Hey."
"W-w-w-w-w-w-what did you need to tell me?" I pull the sleeve of my sweatshirt over my hands. It's cold today. And cloudy.
"Y/N. . . ." Jaxon starts. "I- I did something."
"S-s-s-s-s-s-s-something?"
He takes a deep breathe. "IcheatedonyouwithLeo!"
"Uh- what was that?" I laugh, but my palms start to sweat, despite the chilly air nipping at them.
"Y/N. I cheated on you. . . . with Leo."
My heart stops for a second. Leo? But Leo's a boy? I thought Jaxon was straight. AND LEO? I thought those two hated each other! Every time they're together, they look like they're going to kill each other!
"Y/N?"
I'm about to get angry, but then I remember what I did with Melissa. I cheated on Jaxon. We cheated on each other. "Jaxon. It's okay. I- I cheated on you too. With Melissa."
The worried look on Jaxon's face disappears. Now his eyebrows are furrowed and his cheeks are turning red. He throws the blunt on the ground and stomps on it, grunting. His eyes bore into mine, red and full of fury. I swallow hard.
"You. Cheated. On. Me?"
I nod, hot tears already rolling down my cheeks. "Y-y-y-y-y-yes."
Like an active volcano, Jaxon erupts into a rage. "WHAT THE FUCK, Y/N? AFTER ALL I'VE DONE FOR YOU, AND YOU CHEAT ON ME? I EVEN STOPPED BULLYING PEOPLE FOR YOU! THIS IS HOW YOU REPAY ME? YOU'RE SUCH AN ASSHOLE! I CAN'T BELIEVE I EVER FELL FOR YOU!" He pushes my tiny body to the ground. Black dots cloud my vision and when I touch the back of my head, it's wet. Blood.
When I manage to collect myself and stand back up again, he's gone. Jaxon's gone. Forever. I'm never going to see him again. I start to sob, staring down at the engagement ring on my left hand. The large diamond sparkles in the light, even though the sun hasn't shone in days. I rip it off my little finger and stamp in into the dirt. I can't believe I'm never going to see Jaxon again. I'm so glad I'm never going to see Jaxon again.
I step onto the mulch covering the kids playground, my head hung and my shoulders slumped. I make my way to the biggest apparatus and climb up the many ladders to the highest point. Looking at over the park, I start to sing. It's shaky at the start and the words don't quite come out of my mouth, but soon I'm belting out to the world.
"T-t-this is my fi-ght s-song,
Take back m-my l-life song,
Prove I'm alright song!
My power's turned on!
Starting right now I'll be strong!
I'll play my fight song!
And I don't really care if nobody else believes!
'Cause I've still got a lot of fight left in me!"I'm free. For once in my life, I finally feel free.
