Let us not become weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up

Spencer actually studied for that test — and it paid off. He spent hours working on that stupid paper, and he actually got a grade he was proud of. He got decent grades. Solid A-minuses at least.

Ms. Okazaki posted the test grades — and he got an A. A solid A. Not a just scraping by A, a full A. He just got home from church, and he was waiting for his dad to get home so he could tell him.

Spencer [12:23]

Dude. I killed that stupid test.

He figured he'd text Damien to kill some time.

Damien [12:25]

nice, whatd you get??

Spencer [12:25]

A 95.

Spencer was really proud of his ninety-five percent.

Damien [12:26]

shit, a 95? that's fuckin great

Spencer [12:27]

Yeah, that's an A. Just straight up. Not an A-minus.

Damien [12:27]

dude, hell yea :)) i'm proud of u

Spencer [12:28]

My dad's not gonna kill me, and I won't get my ass grounded.

As if on cue — Spencer's father knocked on the door and entered without waiting for a response.

"Spencer."

"Yeah?" he looked up from his phone, shutting it off and laying it on his chest.

"How did that test go?"

His father's words may have seemed normal enough. He just wanted to check in on how his son's grades were doing. But Spencer felt the menacing undertones behind them. The threat the mere phrase carried.

"I got a ninety-five," Spencer couldn't help the grin that crept its way onto his face.

"Oh," his father's face fell. Spencer didn't get it. He did well. That was a good grade, "I expected better."

"I worked really hard for that ninety-five, Dad," Spencer frowned, "It's an AP class, it's not easy."

"I expect better from you," his father deadpanned, and left the room before Spencer could respond. He left the door open too.

Spencer got up to shut the door — he didn't get why his dad couldn't appreciate what he worked hard to do. A ninety-five was good in a normal class. That was only like, two or three questions that he missed. And a damn good score on the essay — which he usually bombed.

It wasn't like it was possible for him to get higher than an A, anyways. Ms. Okazaki didn't do extra credit. He couldn't exactly change that.

Damien [12:31]

wanna come over??

If it meant getting out of his house?

Spencer [12:32]

Yeah, I'll be over in fifteen minutes.
