Dottie had kept her word, Renae was given a lab to work in. As well as all the necessary tools to work with, the only thing excluded was grinding up the bone. Using the marrow would have to do. Renae set the tools out on the lab table, then grabbed a bone from a tray labeled Femur 32. Grabbing the bead mill tubes from the lab tray, she started her work gathering whatever pieces of the sequence would even be left in the marrow still.
The process took time, and since it was her first one Renae had plenty of time to sit and think. Working brought her back to college, she had much more equipment and it was lot easier to gather data with the tools presented to her.College was a strange time for Renae, she had just gotten out of her last foster home by getting her full ride scholarship to MIT. They were alright people, and they did a lot to help her. They just were neglectful of her emotions. Renae didn't have a lot of family; her parents giving her up at the age of seven. With no next of kin, she was sent into the foster care system. Where she stayed with one family after the next. It wasn't that she was a problem child or that she was hard to care for. She was just recluse and the families felt like they had no connection to her. By the time she was a sophomore she had found a home that would take her in until she turned eighteen. They capitalized on her brains and pushed her to do everything in her power to gain a full scholarship to the best tech school in the United States. With this they neglected her emotions, and giving her a normal teenage experience. The only one who gave her a sense of normalcy was there elder son Hunter. He had always been by her side, giving her a shoulder to cry on. Even when she left for college, there schools were far from one another. Hunter played football for UMass and he was damn good at it too. Renae would make the trip down to watch him play, and he would make trips up to see her after large exams.
She could remember the conversation she had with Hunter about her leaving Massachusetts for Colorado. "Rae are you sure this is a good idea? I've never even heard about this company before." Worry littered his face. "Hunter please don't worry, they are giving me the opportunity I have been waiting for. You even told me to take chances." "Yes, but not like this. It could be dangerous and no one will be around to help you." She could tell he wasn't going to let his go. "I will call you if I even have a feeling that something bad might happen." Giving him a hug to show she was being genuine. "You Promise?" "Yes, I promise Hunter." Renae could feel him sigh in relief as he relaxed in her hug. "Now will you help me pack?" She smiled at him, beaming. As he gave in and helped her get ready.
She should message him and let him know she is okay, and let him know she made a friend that would be able to protect her. Pulling out her phone and flicking it open she sent a quick message his way, Just wanted to check in with you and let you know I am okay, the work is odd and so is the company. But I have made a new friend that will be able to help me if I am in trouble, so don't worry. She ended the message with a smiley to further prove her point.
Hearing the ding of the machine, she knew it had completed a piece of the puzzle. The protein found reading AA/GA Lysine. Lysine was commonly found in mammals, it was a good start. Being that it would have been a more difficult protein to pull. Looking at the clock she saw it was a quarter till five. It had already been a full work day, at this rate it would take her years to get just one sample completed. Storing the protein in the chiller, and marking her data points; she got up ready to leave Crows Canyon. She after all had her date with Dr. Phineas tonight and she needed to get ready.
