2. THE UNKNOWN
A huge current hit us then. It was so big that the car instantly thrashed and jolted forward onto the dirt path and tipped us upside down. It was so bright that everything seemed almost invisible in the brightness. At the same time, it was as if I was being burned. Burned alive. It turned dark simultaneously. I was unconscious for a few moments until I realized the warm moisture pouring from my forehead. It made me dreary. I hated blood. I felt it pour down my head onto my cheeks and I looked onto the drivers’ side. It was empty.
I tried to turn around but my entire torso was mashed up onto the dart path. My whole body ached of warmth. It was boiling. I could feel my hands - they were trapped, under the seats. I could feel the pressure on my head and it was making me queasy. Blood was never one of my advantages-it made me curl into a ball and that’s what I wanted to do now-curl into a ball. I squeezed my eyes shut but opened them as I realized that I was drifting slowly into consciousness. I had to move. I had to get out of the catastrophe. I pulled my hands up with great force and eventually they became free. I pulled the seatbelt-mashed up under my torso too- and yanked it off. The dashboard was completely massacred with shattered glass everywhere. I fell onto the glass and could feel the shards of glass tear into my body. It hurt but not as bad as the pain I could now feel in both of my legs. The pain had intricate both my legs and i couldn’t move. They were trapped so therefore, i too, was trapped. I leaned to my hands and pulled. I pulled as hard as I could to force my legs to stretch out of the seats. Ahead of me there was nothing. Nothing but darkness. I wasn’t aware of what was happening, where I was or where Michael had disappeared to.
I pulled again as I could feel the seat release my now dead legs. I couldn’t feel them. They were numb. They felt sloppy-like the way they flopped about after you sedated them with anaesthetic before an operation. I got onto my palms and tried to crawl. That was when the pain struck me. Hard. My chest burned as i yelped out. Cold ice poured out of my chest as I looked down to see a large gap torn out of my chest. Glass shards were broken within the hole. I felt faint.
I crawled until I felt a place with no glass. My legs were totally numb as I lay on the concrete. My mind wandered in and out of consciousness. I could feel blood gushing out of my head-it was thick this time. I wondered how long it’d be until someone found me here. My chest burned as I took in oxygen.
I started to get my consciousness into full control until i was able to open my eyes. They wouldn’t open at first then they slowly started to awaken into the bewildered open. I looked around, searching endlessly, looking for Michael. Where had he gone? How was he?
Moments passed as I lie on my back and let the blood flow out of my head and onto my hair and the pavement. My pulse carried on pumping hyperactively until suddenly it accelerated again. It didn’t hit me until I opened my mouth and gasped for that I realised the atmosphere was rising up again. I started to burn again. My legs were faint and there was no way I could move. No way would I be able to drag myself up and into the wilderness. I knew that it wouldn’t be long until the brightness appeared again. I waited. I knew it would be torture but what else could i do? Michael wouldn’t come back wherever he was and I couldn’t escape. I could only wish that it would end quickly as possible or it would end as soon as possible.
It returned. I t came with even more force as before. As if it had restored all the resources it had wasted on me in round one. The light was brighter. It blinded me within an instance. It started toward me faster, creeping itself upon me within seconds. I couldn’t escape. I could only endure the torture. The fireworks then started. Only they weren’t as cool as before but as if it was fire straight from hell forced upon me. I was burning. I was left helpless on the floor burning into ashes. My throat trickled with a soreness of water, oxygen. A sudden thrash of noise erupted underneath me and I suddenly, I could feel a warm breeze fly past me as I was flushed into the air. My body was flying aimlessly and I wasn’t in control. I had no idea what was happening. One minute I’m on the floor and the next I’m kicked into the air. I was blind, my body numb, my mind frozen. All i could feel was a boiling current pass through me time and time again as I screamed for help. I remember screaming but I heard no voice. Only the sound of the fire crackling was visible. And then suddenly, my eyes flew open.
The image changed. The blinding blaze was there but this time, I could make out a figure in the eye of the flame. It was only a defined outline yet it seemed to be beckoning me forward. I couldn’t tell whether I was moving or falling, lying on the floor or dying. My throat began to burn again-itchy and dry. It felt like a dry desert. I felt the sparks attack me again. The pain inflicted on me was unbearable. Then finally, I realized I was still in the air because I came to a sudden stop against a solid object. The object I was smashed against crumbled into pieces like a crash of boulders. The object shuddered and crumbled behind me. My back burned as if bare to an oven. My head was empty, quiet. No thought orbited it. It was peaceful, calm but with the burning in the back. My legs were lifeless and floppy. I couldn’t feel them. Any feeling that was left before was erased. My chest was icy and damp. I was numb. I couldn’t feel a thing except for the burning which evaded under my eyelids.
Slowly, I lost all concentration and drifted into the light in my eyes. It was burning yet soothing. Images flew one after the other like a slideshow on play. Past present pictures flowed in and out of my eyes. Michael, Dad...Thoughts were forgotten as soon as they appeared in my head. Where was I? What was happening? Where’s Michael? Was I dying? Maybe I'd see dad once again...
I lost consciousness.
