The Yakshas were divine beings, protectors of humanity. They fought against the demons who planned on taking over the world . The greatest of the yakshas were known as the Five Guardian Yakshas. Gifted with the ability to control a specific element, among water, earth, fire, wind, an lightning .

The Water Yaksha, Momoiji Urahara was a master of her element and could control water in whatever form it took.

The Earth Yaksha, Tensen Kanagaki mastered his element through the use of his feet and dual hammers

The Fire Yaksha, Kai Ichimaru was obsessed with getting stronger, always trying to find new ways to use his element in battle.

The Wind Yaksha, Haru Takaragi was a humble and noble soul, he used his element not only to fight but to entertain humans who despaired in the many battles happening around them.

Finally the Lightning Yaksha, Nakana Teshin who carried a sword made of a special metal that could channel the special lightning he imbued it with. In the midst of battle he always had a stoic and calm nature.

They were the ones who waged war against the leader of the demons, Okakura Shirogai. Despite the incredible power the yakshas had, they struggled against Okakura who eventually overpowered them. The Lightning Yaksha was the last one still standing. He was exhausted and had several wounds.

As Okakura went for the finishing blow, Nakana Teshin quietly despaired; he felt powerless, that feeling led to his desire for power to save the others. That was when a strange spirit enveloped in light appeared in front of Nakana. Time seemed to freeze in it's presence

She asked Nakana how much he was willing to sacrifice, and he replied with "anything"

"Even your very soul"?

The Lightning Yaksha nodded his head. With that the spirit presented to him The Spark of Madness, a horned mask with large fangs that had a faint light blue glow. The spirit left and time flowed normally. Okakura's final blow was stopped in an instant, he stared in awe at Nakana who donned the mask the strange spirit gave him. The Lightning Yaksha's eyes crackled and glowed with electricity, his entire body was enveloped in dark thunder clouds.

Okakura backed off, wary of Nakana's newfound power. Nakana pulled a sword made of pure lightning out of the thunder clouds that surrounded him, and quicker than a blink of an eye, he dashed at Okakura and cleaved him in half.

With what little life he had left, Okakura cursed the Yakshas with an end of great suffering. The curse was his last resort that he planned to use in emergency but to late to act, he used it as a form of vengeance. The Yakshas' elemental powers disappeared as they turned to humans. Although they kept some of their spiritual powers they could never fight with the same strength again. Nakana having already sacrificed the benevolence of his soul, was the only one the curse did not affect. However he still endured great suffering, as he set off to destroy the remnants of Okakura's evil followers. Each demon, evil spirit, and corrupted human he destroyed would would taint his spirit, withering away little by little until he disappeared forever

After a few years the other Yakshas had families with humans that they ended up falling in love with. Momoiji was married and had two children. Her youngest fell ill with a deadly disease that ended up claiming her life. Devasted, Momoiji wanted her daughter to live a long, happy life. Using what little spiritual power she had, Momoiji transfered her life force to bring her daughter back to life at the cost of her own. Thus, the first yaksha died.

Tensen Kanagaki was married and had a child. However, his wife died in child birth. Overwhelmed by pain and grief, Tensen committed suicide to be with her again. Their son would grow up with his grandparents. Thus, the second yaksha died

Kai Ichimaru and Haru Takaragi had families that they happily lived with for many years. However they lived in different villages that eventually went to war with each other. Kai fought in the war but Haru did not. When Kai learned this he was angered by Haru's cowardice and felt he brought shame to being a former yaksha. Kai killed Haru to rid the shame Kai thought Haru brought to the name of Yaksha. Thus, the fourth yaksha died.

Kai then targeted Haru's family who Kai considered filth to be family with a shameful yaksha. However Kai's hand was stayed by the sword of someone he least expected to appear. Before him stood Nakana, who was different from what he remembered. Nakana's was even more emotionless than before. His bright blue eyes were darkened and dull, Kai sensed a heavy darkness from the Thunder Yaksha's spirit energy. Nakana had exterminated many evil and corrupted souls over the years causing his spirit to wither at an  extraordinarily fast pace.

"Nakana, what are you doing here".

"However clueless you may be, the curse Okakura put on you made you delusional and corrupted your soul".

"Corrupted? No, the rest of you are corrupted. Cowardice, selfishness, even you have a soul tainted with darkness". Kai argued

"I sacrificed the benevolence of my soul to attain power that I might protect the earth from demons and evil beings who would try to carry out Okakura's will, whether they are aware of it or not".

"Aware of it"?

"Sorry brother, but I'm just doing what's necessary so that evil doesn't take over again" Nakana said with a dark, dull expression devoid of all emotion.

Lightning crackled at Nakana's feet, and he dashed at Kai with a loud thunderclap, plunging a normal metal sword into his comrade's chest.

"Why... a metal sword, ...Nakana" Kai asked weakly, coughing up blood.

"So I don't destroy you soul completely. If you continued to live longer I wouldn't be able to guarantee your spirit would return with purity"

"I... see" Kai uttered before collapsing.

"Be at peace, brother".

Thus the third yaksha died, leaving Nakana, the Thunder Yaksha to wander the earth in search for the remaining remnants of Okakura's forces. Nakana was now the last yaksha.
