unapologetically woman

and i was called to speak
in front of people younger
than me
and i spoke of being
unapologetically woman.

have the courage to treat us as women.
they taught you and I to surrender and to leave our skins to burn. and then all we did was wait patiently to heal the scars and burns. but we are not built to burn but to ride the blaze.

I want you to
know
to be not silent anymore
you are a woman
and each of your breath has
a life of its own
a mind of its own
a presence,
so epic and awesome
an impact of which in multi-tudes,
so phenomenal
every curve of your lips
a story formed
no more otiose
an existense,
so remarkable
and every touch of your bruised
fingers dipped in gold
a cursive line
brushing past the hardened glass
a life,
so striking
you are a woman
so phenomenal
so epic and awesome
and I want you
to know
to be gentle and kind to yourself
every quirk of yours
and swing of your
waist
so uniquely yours
and every step of your feet
sway of your stride
marching past the path
between ocean and flowers
and the fire in your eyes
lightning the world
in a modern sheen
for every idea
had been modern once
until it wasn't
and every callus on your
hand
dots connected as sparkling
constellation
you are a woman
so quirky
so phenomenal
so dazzling
and I want you
to see for what it is
sterotypes that simplify
that ensnare
sexism that destroyes
the misogyny
that slyly creeps
in your mind
and makes you feel
responsible for the wrong
done to you
I want you to know
to not bring me down
and reach out to the sky
and earth
with curiosity and wonder
I want you to know
to familarise yourself
with the sky
not forgetting what it means
to be on ground
you are a woman
so epic and awesome
your existence
a blessing to all
your life
among the glorious ones
you are a woman
and it is up to you to decide
not them.

have the courage to not doubt our courage and our toughness. they told us we were cute, molded in a model size. but lie it is and we say that to them,
not changing to suit their theories. and we are here to do the things we do, be who we want to be. have the courage to love us so and let us be.

and i did a spoken poetry
as college alumni
hoping for a place for us
with independent will
a place for us
where poems to say of
the problems of gender as it
is today
are written
no more
and we do better
so better.
