The waves lapped against the sandy shore of the Water Kingdom, reflecting the starry night sky above it so that it was hard to tell the ocean and sky apart. Icea stood on the edge of the water, gazing at the night sky. She was alone, finally alone. She sighed and stepped into the water. Rose. May your spirit be here, she pleaded silently, like she'd done a lot of times before. Except those times she visited for fun. Now, something dangerous was stirring. A small wind-chime sort of sound echoed through the sky. Icea waited and waited — but for the first time in days, her sister's spirit didn't appear. An anxious feeling clawed slowly, coldly through Icea's heart, giving her a sinking feeling that was unpleasant. Something was wrong — something was stirring, something dangerous and powerful. Something was coming to shake the earth, something was coming to destroy the Element Continent. Something — or someone, she realized with a shudder — who was powerful enough to repel the powers of spirits, the most sacred things in the entire universe.
Olive sighed as she marched through the marble halls of the Air Palace. For a moment she thought she'd magically transported into the Fire Palace, because of all the red and gold blazing off the angles. But no. All because of someone — the someone that caused all her worrying now. The reason why she hadn't slept in weeks, searching night and day for the missing Fire Queen. Her body ached with soreness, and she was nearly dragging herself into her aunt's chamber — well, once her mother's, still her mother's, but her's for a while. She flung herself onto the mattress and sighed heavily, her thoughts swimming through her skull, ready to burst. The news of the missing queen had — against their best efforts — led to a sort of continent-wide panic attack. People started whispering theories about how the queen was missing, all of them rumors, Olive knew, but some of them were actually possible. The one most popular — and spreading the most rapidly — was of a girl pirate captain who couldn't die who was apparently the Air Kingdom's legendary arch nemesis. Word had it that Lilac had abducted Queen Evera and held her on her evil ship of pirates that sailed through the Unknown Ocean, which was a dangerous oceanscape that would shift and change unpredictably. No one knew where it was, so obviously it was false. Olive sighed again, hiding her face in her pillow. Suddenly there was a thump outside her window . . . as if someone had silently snuck in and was creeping up on her. Olive swirled around and found herself face-to-face with a stranger she'd never met before. She was the same age as Olive, around the age of twelve or eleven. Her hair was brown with a strip of dark blue that ran down her shoulder messily, tied up in a bandana. Her dark eyes were circled in dark circles, as if she hadn't slept in a year, and she had a dangerously-tired expression on her face. She wore a jacket and jeans with holes in them everywhere, so old the color had died. Her nails were also black, and Olive couldn't tell whether it was nail polish or dirt. And, in her clutches, leveled above Olive's neck, was a glistening, sharp knife. Olive yelped and rolled out of the way. Her attacker bristled and advanced. She was still, silent, expression-less. She reminded Olive of a sort of doll from a horror show. Olive leapt into the air, hissing. "Who are you?" She demanded. "Lilac," her attacker said, barely moving her lips. "I'm here to kill you" was the only thing she said with a little emotion. Olive ducked and screamed, "Assassin! Narcissa! There's an assassin in the palace!" Lilac looked up coldly at her. "I'm not an assassin," she said. "I'm here to steal your kingdom. Haven't you heard of the great Pirate Lilac?"
THE END
TIP — If you've heard of Lilac before, you might be either interpreting her as Inertia's dragon, who is also named Lilac, or the same pirate from Ancient Palace. She is a legendary pirate who stalks the Unknown Sea, which they call the Sea of Dreams. She cannot die until someone stabs her in the heart. Her curse also dooms her to never age, so she stays twelve years old for her entire life. Later on she moves to the Cloud Continent and becomes Aurora's rival.
