~Chapter one~
Evera
Evera was always the one worrying or thinking ahead or trying to protect her friends. It came naturally, even though no one seemed to notice. That was alright with her — she could be a hero in the darkness ready to be revealed at just the right time. If it weren't for her, who would have defeated Obsidian? Who would have stopped Eve from drinking the poisonous glass? Fine — technically Eve was the one who stopped Obsidian and his crazy maniac shadowy sorrowful plans, and Eve didn't have any poisonous goblet. But she knew — and had made it very clear for everyone else — that she was nothing to underestimate. She would prove herself the same or better than Eve, or Moonheal, or everyone else who looked under their noses at her. She wasn't even the smallest of the sisters. Moonheal was, but her face and eyes and moony name drew more respect from others than necessary. Evera's palms grew furiously hot whenever she thought like that. She wished she would sprout fire and burn every single thought in her mind, but that would seriously hurt and probably even damage her IQ level, and she was far more smart enough than to do that. So, Evera Sunflame, the hero-in-the-dark, always remained the wisest, most cool-headed of them all, with her majestic, beautiful, wonderful, amazing philosophy. It was a beautiful day — beautiful, if you exclude the not majestic frown on Evera's face as she jostled down the marble columns of the Great Hall in a furious pace. When she arrived in the sunlit courtyard she realized she didn't need to worry — someone was already doing that. Eve sat by a marble fountain, creating a small whirlwind in her palm. When she saw Evera coming Eve stood up, realized what she was doing, and let the small leaves swirling in circles drop to her feet. "Hello," Evera attempted. Eve stood up and looked at her sister for a moment. Evera realized Eve was searching for anyone behind her. "No, she —" Evera hesitated. She's — not exactly following my philosophy? Not exactly being the best little sister in the world? "She's busy, just busy." Eve nodded slightly. "That's not what I'm worried about." Evera tilted her head, confused. Now, that was what she would've been worried about, if not anything else. What did Eve have in mind? Was she expecting Evera to say something — to come up with an idea — or was she waiting for someone? "You know," her sister said slowly. "It's going to be the twenty-first century soon." "Yes," Evera agreed, mimicking Eve's tone of voice. Eve's eyes seemed to fix on the towering mountains behind them. She flicked her hand softly at a figure approaching from the distance. Evera turned around, an exasperated expression crossing her face. Finally — Moonheal moved lightly across the gardens towards them, her sapphire eyes fixing on one of them. "FINALLY!" Evera yelped breathlessly. Eve stood up beside her, making her wonder whether she should too. "Hello," Moonheal said pleasantly, her voice so soft and chiming it sounded like a small breeze sweeping through the gardens. "Hi," Eve answered. Evera did NOT like the way they were communicating, as if they were using a secret code that she didn't know, or sending messages with their eyeballs at each other. "Ahem," she interrupted gruffly. "What took you so long?" Moonheal ignored her question, which made Evera want to explode even more. "What century is it going to be?" The Water Queen asked briskly, sweeping down beside them on the marble fountain ledge. Evera seemed to get something. This had to be some sort of secret password that her sisters used to share top-secret information, or something similar. "The twenty-first century, of course," she answered immediately. Moonheal laughed and caught a falling petal on her palm. "Of course. Look, I need one thing from each of you, so that I can put the plan into action." The way she said, 'plan' made Evera want to roll her eyes — Moonheal was putting a plan into action, a plan that didn't have anything to do with them, a plan that they didn't know, and she needed something from them? "Um, sorry, I don't think anything flammable would be useful underwater." "This isn't about something just underwater!" Moonheal cried. "It's about the Seven Seas." " . . . which is underwater?" Eve filled in. Moonheal rolled her eyes. "Of course not! You probably just heard about it somewhere and thought it was interesting. The Seven Seas are the Seven Seas of the American world: the Arctic, the Atlantic, the Indian, the Pacific, the Mediterranean, the Caribbean, and the Gulf of Mexico. So there's no way we can conquer them in reality — just explore and navigate. Evera, I need some waterproof flammables we can use underwater for lighting. Eve, you will be coming with me." "Wait — what? Why can't I come with you too?" Evera cried, and at the same time Eve burst something about avocados and potatoes. "Stay back here to take care of the Kingdom," Moonheal told her. "We'll be back in less than a month." "Says you," Evera muttered under her breath. Eve nudged her affectionately. "You'll take good care of the Continent. I know that." "Also," Moonheal added, "Olive can help if there's any trouble. Narcissa will keep the kingdom in peace." Evera sighed. I don't need Olive or Narcissa, she thought to herself. Why does everyone keep underestimating me? Because of my stupid philosophy? No, her philosophy was great. Maybe it was just how she was working it out — maybe it was time to step up and reveal herself. And she knew just how to prove it. By taking care of the entire continent for a month. She would transform it into a better, stronger and wealthier continent. She had complete confidence in herself. Her sisters were coming in for a big surprise — she would show them what it meant to have a name like Evera, a name that would last in history forever and ever.
