As the morning drones on, I worry about what will happen at lunch. Will my bad luck take over again? I can't concentrate in class. When the lunch bell rings, everyone races out of the classroom and through the doors of the lunchroom. As I trudge through them, I see Alexander and wave glumly. Then, I head towards her.
"Hey, birthday girl!" she says. "I'll be right back." And to my horror, Alexander gets up and leaves the lunchroom, which leaves me all alone. With no one to protect me. I start eating my lunch, but then I hear snickers behind my back. I turn around and see, of course, Brianna. Again.
"Oh, look at you, all alone." she says mockingly. "Where's all your friends? Oh, wait, I forgot. You don't have any." All of her friends at her table laugh.
"I have friends! Alexander just went to the bathroom! Oh, and by the way, do you always need to have your friends around? Or do you cry like a baby if they leave?" I snap angrily. But no one heard me since I only said it in my head. In the real world, I just looked down at my feet.
"Well, have a nice and friendless lunch," says Brianna sarcastically, and she and her friends walk back to their table.
Now I'm on the verge of crying. Get it together, I tell myself, and my tears go back into my eyes instead of rolling down my face. Then, I see Alexander. We talk and eat lunch, and when we're finished, Alexander packs up her lunchbox and leaves the lunchroom for 7th period. "Bye, Abby," she calls over her shoulder.
I go to throw my stuff out in the garbage can across the room. Oh, no. Across the room? That means I have to pass Brianna's table to get there! Oh, why did Alexander have to leave?
I quickly try to walk past the table, but I'm too late. Brianna sticks her foot out so I stumble. I catch my balance. Whew! I didn't fall! But then, I hear a giggle and someone pushes me from behind, making me lose my balance and sprawl to the floor, getting half-eaten disgusting school lunch all over me.
"Maybe you should be more careful next time, Abigal," says Brianna. Then, Brianna looks up, ready to walk away, when her eyes widen. Then she says sweetly, "Oh, Abigal, did you trip? Poor thing. Here, let me help you get up."
After that, Brianna starts to HELP me. Something's up. I frown and turn around to what Brianna widened her eyes at. Oh. That's why Brianna's a goody-two-shoes gal now. The principal has walked in, and she's walking towards us.
"Hmm... What happened here, girls?" she says, raising one eyebrow. I open my mouth to tell her, but Giggles interrupts me.
"Abigal tripped on her own feet. We were just going to the bathroom to help her clean up." What? That's the complete opposite of the truth! Leave it to Brianna and her friends to twist the real story.
"Girls, why don't we step out into the hallway." says the principal. Yes! Maybe I can tell her the truth!
