be soft
do not let the world you hard
do not let the pain make you hate
do not let bitterness steal away your sweetness
—did you take his advice
or did the world win over
in making you hard
making you hate
and making you bitter
we cannot successfully
swim against the current
only by our own will
the easiest path is to
love the one who loves us
hate the one who hates us
the easiest path leads us
to a cycle of hardened hearts—
of people wounding
other people
—all waiting to receive
an unconditional love
but never willing
to take the first step
of humility in giving it
do not submit to
the patterns of the world
instead
renew your mind
train it in seeking opportunities
to do justice
to love kindness
to walk humbly with God
be willing to
take up your cross
and follow the road that leads
to living an everlasting life
scatter joy
spread love
make this world a warmer place
embracing those with colder hearts
