Heading out during the dead of night was not the smartest choice on Kenny's part, but in his defense Marlon and Brody got a whole lot fishy.
They were hiding something that could put them in danger, he was not going to risk that. If it weren't for the map he had gotten earlier in the day they would have probably walked around for ages.
The dirt trail soon turned to concrete. Aj looked especially tired by the time the floor beneath their feet was no longer dirt. Walker growls could be heard from all around them along with the chirp of crickets.
The sound of the leaves crunching beneath their shoes were barely audible. The walkers they saw were too far to be making the sound of leaves crunching they were hearing.
Kenny side glanced Aj who discreetly pulled out his gun. His tiny fingers resting off the trigger. When Kenny did turn around he searched the trees. "I know you're there. I'd recommend coming out now before you end up with a bullet in your skull."
Initially nothing happened, however no more than three seconds later a branch snapped in half. A dirty blond haired girl stepped out from behind a tree with a meat cleaver in her hand.
"Violet?" Kenny stared at her puzzled, as he immediately pushed Aj's hand down.
The girl in question smiled softly, her free hand coming up to grab onto the strap from her bag. If it weren't for that one hand movement he would have missed the backpack she was wearing completely.
"Why are you out here?" He added, closing the distance between them. "You should be with your friends not out here"
"I'm out here because your the first person who gave a shit about me. Yeah, there my friends but they don't know me. not really" she muttered under her breath. She opened her mouth again only for it to click shut a second later before turning back to the tree "I'm not the only one..."
Kenny eye brows shot up, his gaze went back to the tree she was looking at. Tenn slowly walked out, both of his hands clutching tightly onto the straps of his bag. "Tenn!" Aj squealed quietly and went to hug the older boy his eyes shinning brightly.
"Since Minnie and Sophie are gone Tenn is my responsibility and being with you seems like the best choice. You know how to really survive, not like what Marlon has been trying to do. There's something their hiding and I don't want him to get caught up in this. Please take us with you" Violet explained barley above a whisper to keep the two kids from over hearing. Her explanation then turned to a soft plea.
Kenny could already feel more gray hairs coming. "It's no safer out here than it was behind those school walls, Things out here work way different than they do behind those walls. If you really want this then I'll take you both, but you must listen to everything I say and sometimes what Aj says when I put him in charge. Out here Aj is basically the teen and you two mere infants"
Violet gave him a skeptical look making Kenny sigh heavily. "You don't know what things are like out here, we do. Aj grew up on the road while you two were sheltered. Even if I take you with me without you agreeing to listen to me you'll be dead before the next sun sets." This time Violet nodded. He wasn't sure what made her change her mind about the whole listening thing, however he was glad.
"We'll listen. I won't personally like it, however you know better than I do" Kenny nodded. His eye glancing around.
He whistled to get Aj's attention who dropped the conversation he was having with Tenn. he put the gun back into his pocket then pulled out a knife.
While he did that Kenny had pulled out the crowbar he had in his bag. Violet looked alarmed at the way he ran a hand down the rusted metal before bring it up.
He could tell she thought he was going to hit her with it, yet that never happened. Instead the crowbar came swinging down on the walker who had been trying to sneak up on her, with a loud crunch.
A few second later a walker fell to knees, as Aj stabbed a walker in its knees a few feet away from Tenn.
Vi eyes widen when a piece of skull hit back of her head. She turned just in time to see the walker fall limp at her feet. "Lesson one, make sure to say on high alert. Walkers and people will try to sneak up on you."
"H-holy shit, thanks" she stuttered out.
"Let's get moving we need to find a place to rest for the night. It's not smart to move around during the night. Only do it if you absolutely need to. Lesson two, when the sun goes down shit goes down" He didn't even wait for the two former Ericson kids to process that information before he began to walk away at a face pace. Aj on the other hand was used to his grandpa antics and followed close behind.
The two slowly came out of their daze to find Kenny and Aj quite a few feet ahead. They were startled to see how far they had gotten from them. Their footsteps were loud from the sprinting they had to do to catch up.
It wasn't until a few miles were put behind them that Kenny had shifted to stand between Violet and Tenn while Aj walked in front of him. "Try not to look back or give anything away, but we're being followed"
"How do you know that?" Tenn question, his hands coming up to grab the straps of his bag to keep him from tensing up.
"We can feel their eyes on us" Aj chirped in, mindful to keep his voice down.
"They're also being very loud. Footsteps are heavy. Leaves and twigs are snapping as they walk. Whispers are loud." Kenny supplied in more detail than Aj.
Vi bit her lip "What should we do?"
Kenny glanced at the nervous look she had on her face for a second "pretend nothing is wrong. I'm not sure if these are your friends or the people of the guy I pushed into the herd, it's better to try and lose them. Gradually walk faster, we don't want them to get trigger happy if they aren't the kids."
Tenn looked pale, so did Violet. The two mutter a soft okay then fell into the pace Aj was setting.
