Veronica's POV
I was getting ready for bed when my phone started buzzing. I looked at it and the name on the screen surprised me. Why would Betty be calling me and why would she be calling me this late at night? It's nearly eleven. I hesitated to pick it up but I did.
"Yes?" I asked nervously. I half expected her to yell or say something terrible but she didn't she just sighed before she started.
"I know it's late and I know you can't leave your house but I really needed to talk to you,"
"I thought you were ignoring me. I thought I was worthless to you now?" I said quietly.
"No! It's not like that at all. I don't like doing this but I have to because of everything else, okay. Just listen to me, please."
"Why should I? You never listened to me."
"Because I'm trying to help you, V. I want you to be safe and I know you're not safe in that place."
"What are you talking about?" I asked acting dumb even though I admitted so much to her only a few months ago. There is no way she's forgotten about that.
"Don't be like that." I smiled as she said that. I don't know why I just did. "Just please believe me when I say your parents are running an illegal business and my dad's been chasing them for seven years trying to catch them. He never got close to them. Now I shouldn't be telling you any of this but our friendship is what could be what saves you permanently. You don't have to deal with their abuse ever again. You can finally be free." I smiled as she said that. Our friendship is what could save me. I thought about it. I could finally not have their words embedded into my brain 24/7. But I do remember that last time I tried to get better. I mean, I got better but it was a long and terrible process. I relapsed so much. It sucked. I sighed. "Veronica? Are you there?"
Just then I heard footsteps approaching my bedroom door. I didn't have time to say anything I just hung up and climbed into my bed and pretended to be asleep. My door opened and I lay as still as possible. I layed there and waited. Soon my door shut. I waited to hear footsteps walking away and when I finally heard them I sat up. I looked over saw that my phone was gone.
"Dammit," I muttered and laid back down. I guess I'll just go to sleep.
Sleeping was a struggle tonight. All I could think about was what Betty was telling me. That I could potentially be saved. Well, physically not mentally. If only she could understand everything and not question it. I know she tries but it doesn't always work. Although, I don't have the heart to tell her that. Not everyone can be saved.
I was woken up by my mother. I looked at my alarm and saw that it was only 5:30. Fuck. This bullshit again? I got up and started to get around for the day before she could even say anything. She left and I followed not too far behind. They were sitting at the table and I sat across from them. My dad sighed.
"So, we are going to try this again. Now, it's been a little over a year since we last tried this and at that time we had to send you away. We going to do it again and hopefully, you've matured. You are going away for a week or two-"
"To go stay in somebody's goddamn basement so they can use me whenever they want and you can get your money?" I questioned. I knew that was testing his patience. After what Betty told me last night I felt like I had more confidence and courage to stand up for myself. It was scary but felt... kind of good.
"Veronica-"
"Go ahead! Send me away again for all I care. At least at that place people care about me and don't only bring me out when it's a convenience for them." I said. "I'm not going to another forty-year-old man's basement so he and his other old and nasty friends can use me like I'm some kind of sex toy. How about you send somebody else to go endure that? How about yourselves? Go see how I feel!" I finished and quickly made my way to my room. I knew they were following me so I locked my door behind me. I let out a sigh. "I'm going to Betty's,"
