Silentkit bounced around excited to be made an apprentice today. Yesterday Sorreltail, who had been sent out to see if any cat wanted to join their clan, found three cats who were willing to join. One of them was a kittypet who was kicked out when pregnant with kits and the other two were shadowclan warriors. The shadowclan warriors were sister and brother, Wingheart and Blossomcloud. Wingheart was a long furred grey-ish tabby tom with black at the tip of his tail and on his neck fur, he had amber eyes. While Blossomcloud was a light grey she-cat with a white muzzle and right paw. She also had a dark left front leg and green eyes. The loner kittypet was named Apple and asked if she could have a warrior name which was then made Appleberry. She was a light brown and golden tortoise-shell with a cream muzzle, she had amber eyes and long and furry ears. He wondered which of these cats would be his mentor. Other than Appleberry as she had kits on the way. One of the three cats being picked today would be the medicine cat apprentice. I hope I don't end up as the medicine cat apprentice! The thought of infected wounds and open cuts makes my skin crawl.

After the naming ceremony Silentpaw ran up to his mentor, Wingheart, at the call of his name. "Yes?" Silentpaw asked eagerly. Sighing Wingheart flicked his tail as a sign for Silentpaw to follow him. "What was it like in Shadowclan and why did you leave?" Squirrelpaw asked, trying not to sound too eager.

"Me and my sister? We left because our mother had always wanted to leave Shadowclan. I don't know why, but she did." he answered, showing a sign of happiness at the young cat's interest in his old home.

"Did you love someone there? In Shadowclan?"

"Yes, Her name was Splitmoon. I loved her very much."

"What did she look like?" Silentpaw asked to get a picture in his head.

"She is a white she-cat with green eyes. If we're lucky we might see her at gatherings. Me and her got made warriors on the same day, which was five sunrises ago." The grey warrior said proudly. Then as they kept padding around to explore the territory Wingheart asked "It's surprising the other clans excepted Fernclan." What do you mean? Silentpaw thought, looking curiously at the grey warrior. We've always been one of the five clans. Did we come later and our clan couldn't remember? Wingheart knew exactly what borders were what, because of scent, and whenever they stumbled into another mentor he'd ask about the best spots to hunt in their territory. Silentpaw looked at his mentor "Are you okay?" he asked Wingheart who was looking down at his paws. Looking up, Wingheart seemed startled. "Yes, Yes. I'm fine. How about we do some hunting?"

still concerned, Silentpaw asked "Are you sure? Do you miss your home?" All Wingheart did was nod as a reply.

"What can you smell?" Wingheart changed the subject. Sniffing around Silentpaw picked up the scent of mouse and something else he'd never smelled before. "Mouse." I'm not going to mention the other thing. It could just be a herb Leafpool hadn't told me about and I'll be making a fuss over nothing! "Fox!" Silentpaw heard his sister Flowerpaw screech. Was that the other thing I could scent? Silentpaw wondered, thinking that he should've said something. "Flowerpaw!" Silentpaw yelled rushing towards her scent.

"Come back Silentpaw!" His mentor shouted.

"Three foxes! Blossomcloud where are you? Silentpaw!" His sister yelled. Rushing beneath the trees and brushing against the ferns, Silentpaw's pads started to hurt. He hadn't ever run as fast as he was now. What was he going to do? Fight off three foxes for his sister? "I'm coming!" Blossomcloud yelled "Where are you?" Silentpaw bounded forwards until he and Blossomcloud came face to face. "Help! Please!" Flowerpaw screeched with pain. Blossomcloud pointed with her tail to where her scent was and they ran side by side together. Blossomcloud's well groomed fur brushed him and gave Silentpaw more energy. Running as fast as he could, he reached Flowerpaw just in time and the two other cats scared the foxes off. "Flowerpaw! Flowerpaw! Wake up! Please, Please." Flowerpaw lifted her head up, weakly she smiled. Looking around Silentpaw found a bed of moss next to a stream and under a tree. Blossomcloud noticed it as well and the two cats moved Flowerpaw onto the moss bed. "Thank you." She coughed "Thank you." closing her eyes, Flowerpaw made herself more comfortable. Shaking his head, Silentpaw licked his sister on the ear. "You can't die yet. You're too young. All of us are!" he yowled. Looking up at the sky, the bright sun covered by trees, Silentpaw yowled in protest as his heart sank. "Why Starclan! Why? Why would you do this!" a paw touched Silentpaw's flank and he looked back. Tears were streaming down Flowerpaw's face. "Don't worry Silentpaw. I'll be fine, don't blame Starclan. They can't control foxes, it's not their fault." Blossomcloud licked Flowerpaw's shoulder. Then stepped back and looked worriedly at Silentpaw. "Make sure she doesn't die on us! I'll get Leafpool." Silentpaw nodded and watched Blossomcloud turn and bound down a path that led to the camp. Turning back to Flowerpaw, Silentpaw noticed her breathing slowing. "I'll be alright, no matter what happens." Silentpaw shook his head "No, you'll be safe. Our mother will save you."

"Just close your eyes and rest. The sun is going down." Leafpool told Flowerpaw "You'll be alright, Nothing can hurt you now." Silentpaw licked Flowerpaw's barely moving flank and looked into Blossomcloud's eyes, despair and hurt hung in the medicine den like fog. Blossomcloud licked Flowerpaw's ears, turned and padded out of the medicine cat den. Padding after her Silentpaw sensed sadness prickling from the older cat's pelt. "Blossomcloud?" Silentpaw asked.

"I'm sorry I couldn't save her!" Blossomcloud snapped, "I couldn't save her or Dewfrost! I can't save anything, anyone I love or care about dies doesn't care!" Blossomcloud stepped back and mewed "sorry." then bounded away into the forest.

"Wait! Blossomcloud!" Silentpaw yelled rushing after her. Dewfrost, Who's that? Her mother maybe, But she's blaming everything on herself! Sympathy for the other cat weld up in Silentpaw's belly, Grass brushed his stomach and his paws made the bushes he ran around rustle. When he reached Blossomcloud he saw her staring of onto the moors of Windclan. "I should just go back to Shadowclan." She mewed, not turning to face Silentpaw, "I'm no use here as I don't know how to hunt in the moors or in lakes." Turning to face Silentpaw she padded up to him and said, "I'm still an apprentice. You're the first to know that." Silentpaw's mouth dropped and his eyes widened, but he managed to close his jaws. "I know, I lied to Crowstar and everyone else but at least you have an extra clan member. I was about to have my assessment to become a warrior." Blossomcloud looked back at the moors "Did your father and mother tell you where Fernclan came from?" she asked. Silentpaw shook his head and signaled with his tail that they should walk and talk. "Your clan is half clan." she explained, "Your mother was from Thunderclan and your father was from Windclan. They loved each other so much that they ran off and made a new clan. For some reason Starclan took their side and sent a sign to all of the leaders that Fernclan is now the sixth clan." As they padded closer to the camp Silentpaw couldn't help feeling angry with his parents that they hadn't told their kits. No wonder we don't have many clan members! We aren't one of the original clans. Silentpaw licked Blossomcloud's ear "Thanks for telling me that, I'm going to check on Flowerpaw. Also just so you know it isn't your fault that Flowerpaw was hurt." He flicked her shoulder with his tail and ran to the medicine cat den.
