Chapter 7

Jaypaw yawned as he followed his mother and sister back into the camp. They had grieved for Flowerpaw the night before and were heading for their nest now. As Jaypaw laid in his nest of moss, his fur brushing against Leafpools, he fell sound asleep. He blinked to find himself in the camp, only it was deserted and there were no dens. He could see! It wasn't the first time he had been able to see in a dream but he still wasn't used to it. He looked around and saw a younger Crowstar and Leafpool sitting in the hollow tree, used as the leader's den. What are they doing in a deserted and broken camp? Jaypaw creeped closer to them and listened to what they were saying. "Crowfeather, we must go back! You heard Midnight. The badgers are attacking Cinderpelt." Leafpool wailed. Crowfeather must have been Crowstar's warrior name, but where does Leafpool want to go back to? Wasn't Cinderpelt the old Thunderclan medicine cat? And who is Midnight? Crowfeather slowly nodded, his gaze dull and sad. He sighed and Jaypaw couldn't help wishing he had padded towards them earlier to understand what they were talking about. "I guess that means you'll go back to-" Crowstar began before Leafpool cut him off.

"That's for me to decide and I'm not making any decision until I've saved her! Come on." She meowed, rushing off, Crowstar at her tail. Jaypaw followed, they had all gone through Windclan territory and were now approaching the Thunderclan camp. The three cats emerged out of the entrance and Jaypaw saw the camp had been trashed and there were cats and badgers fighting, blood was everywhere. Jaypaw sniffed to smell Squirrelflight's scent. He turned to see her bounding up to Leafpool, "Quick! Cinderpelt is in there with a badger, and Sorreltail is giving birth." Leafpool gave a stressed sigh before rushing into a den with Crowfeather and Squirrelflight behind. Jaypaw was about to follow before he heard Crowstar say he'd get back up and run out of camp. Jaypaw looked around to see cats fighting ferociously as the badgers came close to winning. He heard wails coming from the medicine den and he rushed in to see Leafpool staring and Cinderpelt's corpse, and a badger fleeing the scene. Sorreltail yowled at Leafpool, as she gave birth but Leafpool just stood staring at the medicine cat lying lifeless on the floor. Squirrelflight's eyes lit up with panic as she realised her sister wouldn't do anything. She looked at cat, to cat, to cat, until she ran to Sorreltail. Sorreltail is giving birth, Leafpool is frozen with shock and Squirrelflight doesn't know how to help queens give birth. Jaypaw began whispering the method in Squirrelflight's ears. He knew she couldn't hear him but it was worth a try. Jaypaw was startled at a growl behind him. "Move, Squirrelflight. Cinderpelt died helping Sorreltail and I will not let her die for nothing. Sorreltail will have the easiest birth ever!" Jaypaw padded out of the den, relieved that Sorreltail would be helped before his dream faded into black. He opened his eyes to the den light. What was that dream? Is it a message from Starclan? For some reason I feel like I shouldn't tell Leafpool or Crowstar about it. Jaypaw shook out his fur at the uneasy feeling under his pelt.
