Foxes are stupid! Fernpaw thought, How dare they hurt my sister like that! Anytime I see one I'll claw it's fur off! Fernpaw dug her claws into the ground and teared at it as her fur began to fluff up. "Fernpaw? Are you alright?" Fernpaw bounced up at Honeypaw's question, and nodded. Fernpaw tried to hide her embarrassment by beginning to eat the thrush next to her. Honeypaw walked up to Fernpaw and began to eat a mouse next to her. "I know it's sad that your sister is hurt, but I'm sure she'll get better! It's only a few scratches and bites." She soothed.
Fernpaw bristled "Have you seen her! She was already the second smallest kitten in our litter and the fact that she got beat up by two foxes doesn't help! She's going to die, I know it!" Honeypaw rested her tail on Fernpaw's shoulder, Fernpaw calmed down. Fernpaw felt Empathy flow from Honeypaw's pelt; she had probably felt the same way when Molepaw's sickness hadn't responded to Leafpool's herbs. When the entrance to camp rustled she saw Silentpaw and Blossomcloud walk in resting their tails on one another's shoulder. "Those two have known each other for a day!" she muttered, disturbed by their already close relationship. Honeypaw laughed and shook her head. "They share grief over the same cat! I got closer to you because of our shared grief over Molepaw." Fernpaw knew she was right, she picked on anything she disliked or was jealous of and she was aware of it because of Honeypaw. Sorreltail walked up to Fernpaw "Are you ready to go?" she asked. Fernpaw looked up, confused and then remembered that she was going to learn how to hunt. She got to her paws and nodded. "Goodbye Honeypaw! I'm going to learn how to hunt now." Honeypaw waved goodbye with her tail. Fernpaw walked after Sorreltail into the forest, the trees full of chirping birds, the river alive with fish and the ground flourished with plants and voles. Fernpaw sniffed the air and felt as though all her worries faded away into the depths of the forest. When she looked back at Sorreltail she noticed sorreltail bouncing around like she was a fidgety kit. "Sorreltail?" she asked but her mentor didn't seem to hear. Fernpaw rolled her eyes and crouched down. Her tail brushed the ground as she lashed her tail, busy trying to look for prey. "Calm down Fernpaw." Sorreltail instructed "The prey will definitely hear you with your tail throwing around all the leaves like that." Fernpaw stopped moving around her tail and sniffed the air, Squirrels and a Mouse. Hopefully I can catch both of them. I need to show Sorreltail what a great warrior I'll be! Fernpaw creeped forward, "wait," Sorreltail giggled. "What do you smell?" Fernpaw sat up. What could it be now? "A mouse and a squirrel, Why? What is it Sorreltail?" Sorreltail smiled and picked up a leaf in ner jaws. She let go of the leaf and watched the wind blow the way the mouse and squirrel were staying. "Look at that. The wind is blowing towards the prey, that way the mouse can smell our scent and can run away. We have to hunt downwind all the time so the prey can't hear or smell us coming." Fernpaw nodded, so do we have to find a way to get down wind? "Maybe I should teach you how to hunt fish first. You might be better at that." Sorreltail offered, Fernpaw nodded she'd never eaten a fish before and she wanted to know what it tasted like. Would it be slimy? Tangy? Doubt it.. Sorreltail led her to a pool, "It's good that we have three different prey types in our territory," she meowed. "We have fish for leaf-bare. Rabbit's, Squirrels and mice for New-leaf and green-leaf. Since we can swim as well we can jump into the water and cool off in the Hot days of green-leaf!" Sorreltail shook her head and focused on catching a fish, Our warriors aren't the best at catching fish. That's why we don't have many in camp, I'm going to be the best fish hunter in the clan! Sorreltail made sure her shadow wasn't over the water and she waited for an unexpecting fish to swim by and be scooped up. When a fish did go by Sorreltail scooped the fish up with her paw and killed it with a swift bat to the neck. "It doesn't have fur! I wonder how it tastes." Fernpaw lowered her head to bite it and have a taste. Then Sorreltail Pushed her head back with her tail. "You can't eat before the clan has been fed!" she laughed, "Anyway do you want to try?" Fernpaw nodded and copied Sorreltail. But she ended up slipping in when she tried to scoop up the fish. Maybe I won't be the best fish hunter. Defeated, Fernpaw swam onto the shore and shook her fur to dry it as she heard her mentor laughing and giggling. "It's not funny!" She snapped.
"Just a little bit." Sorreltail mewed, "Have another try! I was exactly the same when I first tried to fish." Fernpaw tried again and this time actually hooked the fish out of the water with her claw. Sorreltail meowed congratulations and they both fished for a while longer. "Okay I think that's it for today. Tomorrow I'll show you how to swim." The two she-cats padded back to camp with a heap of fish and when they arrived, Put it all in the fresh-kill pile. "Bring a mouse or something to Appleberry in the nursery and then you can eat something yourself." Sorreltail said before she walked up to her mate Brakenfur and shared tongues by the warrior den. I will, I will.
