I sprinted down the empty streets of Sydney, my combat boots slapping against the empty pavement as I ran to my all-black jeep with my dog, Loki. I was the only healthy person left in this city. Everyone was infected, and no one was healthy like me. I was immune to the illness, so I would never be infected.
In an attempt to evacuate the entire city, hundreds of people died and only two actually made it out alive. I stopped as I heard something behind me, swinging my gun around front and spinning on my heel. I saw a group of boys, and I slowly approached them, keeping my AK-47 aimed at their heads.
“Who the fuck are you?” I snapped at them. Loki growled as he sat at my feet. They were dressed in all black and were all carrying lethal weapons on their backs.
“Relax princess.” The curly headed, green eyed boy said cockily and I rolled my eyes. They all looked nineteen or twenty.
“Listen up fuck head, don’t underestimate me. I am completely fine with shooting you right in the dick. Or is it a vagina?” I snapped at him, and the other boys laughed at their friend. He scoffed and rolled his eyes.
“I’m Ashton. These are my mates, Calum, Luke, and Michael.” The boy said and I just rolled my eyes and swung my gun back over my shoulder, letting it hang from the strap over my back. I fixed my leather jacket and cracked my neck.
“And who are you princess?” He asked, smirking at me as his eyes trailed my body. I cocked my head to the side.
“I am none of your business and I suggest you leave. Shit gets bad here at night.” I snapped, turning on my heel and grabbing my keys to my car. I unlocked it and opened the trunk, letting my German Shepard jump in. I slammed it shut and walked to the drivers side.
“Mind if we crash with you tonight? It’s late and we have nowhere to go.” The boy, who was a lot nicer than his douche of a friend, asked. I believe this one’s name is Calum. He was hot, in fact they all were. I sighed and turned back around.
“Whatever.” I said, hopping up in my jacked up jeep and starting the engine. They all stared at me in shock and I rolled my eyes and rolled down the window.
“Get in dumb asses.” I said, causing them all to run up and hop in one by one. Calum sat in the passenger side while the rest of them climbed in the back. I shifted the gear and took off down the streets for my house.
I put on my music, pulling down my sunglasses and blasting Green Day.
“Nice music taste… We never caught your name.” Calum said, looking over at me.
“I’m Allison.” I smiled, whipping down the street. They nodded and the rest of the car ride was just the music drowning out everything else. We pulled up to my house and I grabbed my remote from the car, shutting off the electric fence around my house.
“Get out and go through the gate.” I ordered, and instantly the boys got out and walked through the gate and up to the front door. I got out and ran around the back, opening the trunk and letting Loki out. I grabbed a bottle of bleach and slammed the trunk shut. I let the dog in the gate and then walked around the car, dropping bleach onto the pavement to cover our trail so we didn’t get killed. I poured bleach all the way up to the gate and then walked in, shutting and locking it. I switched it on, and you could now here the faint buzzing of the deathly fence. I ran up to the door, dropping the bottle of bleach and unlocking the door.
“C’mon.” I said, walking into the house. Once the dog and the boys were in, I slammed the door shut and locked it with all my different locks. I pulled my boots off and threw them next to the door.
“So boys, what brings you to the worst part of the world Australia?” I asked, walking into the kitchen. They followed me into there, all of them leaning against my counter.
“Well, we wanted to get out. See what it was like.” The blonde one said, I think his name is Luke. I nodded and went to my fridge, grabbing a few bottles of water. I tossed one to each of the boys and then poured one in Loki’s water bowl. I then grabbed my own and walked back over to the boy.
“Why are you still here? Why don’t you come back to the safe places where everyone who isn’t infected stays?” The boy, who I believe was Michael, asked. I shrugged.
“I like being by myself.” I answered, going to the closet in the hall and pulling it open. I grabbed my gun that was propped against the wall and stowed it away, exchanging it for a small handgun. I put ammunition in it and shoved it in my gun pocket on my belt. I saw the sun was setting and I went around the house, shutting the blinds and locking all of the windows.
“Loki, come here boy.” I called, double checking the perimeter. I armed my alarm for the perimeter. I beckoned the dog to me.
“Go to bed.” I said and he instantly went to my room down the hall and didn’t re-appear again. I smiled at how well he was trained and then turned back to the boys.
“Okay, don’t open any of the doors. You can all sleep in the guest room, or on the couch. Bathroom is down there.” I said, pointing to the hall before turning on my heel to go to my room.
“You’re going to bed already? It’s like eight ‘o’ clock.” Luke said and I sighed turning around.
“I’m just going to my room, stay up however long you want.” I said, turning back around and shutting the door to my room. I grabbed a pair of joggers and Nike mid calves. I changed out of my black jeans and socks. I decided to keep on my black sweatshirt. I turned and saw my dog laying on my bed. I smiled and plugged my phone into my beats headphones I took from an apple store. I plugged them into my phone and laid on my bed. My door opened a bit, and I reached for my gun. I sighed when I realized it was just Calum and I removed my headphones, grabbing the dog collar so he wouldn’t jump up.
“No, Loki.” I snapped and he laid his head back in my lap as Calum sat on the end of my bed and started petting the dog.
“Can I help you? Or did you just come in here to pet my dog?” I asked, smiling at how large Calum’s smile was as he was rubbing my dogs head. Calum seemed like a nice boy, but I don’t get associated with people like him. Everyone close to me always dies, and it’s usually my fault.
“Well babe, I just wanted to get to know you since you are letting us stay here.” He said, and for some reason I felt my heart jump out of my chest. The word ‘babe’ made my heart flutter instantly and I felt my stomach turn.
Stop Allison, you just met the boy. I said to myself and I smiled at him.
“Well what do you want to know?” I asked, looking down at his arms which were covered in a few tattoos. He cocked his head from side to side and hummed, trying to think of a question. He snapped his head up and smiled at me.
“What’s your favorite movie?” He asked and then leaned forward, as if he was going to take note of everything I was about to say. I thought about it for a minute and then decided.
“Finding Nemo.” I answered, smiling at the thought of that movie. Those were the good times, when the world wasn’t on its last strand. He smiled at me, laughing a bit.
“You’re really cute.” He blurted out and I just rolled my eyes, flipping my blonde hair out of my face. I laughed and he smiled at me again.
“How old are you, and when is your birthday?” He asked me two questions.
“I’m seventeen, and my birthday is September 2nd. How about you?” I asked back, wanting to see if we were really that far apart.
“I am nineteen, and my birthday is January 25th.” He answered and I mentally cheered. Stop Allison, you don’t get yourself attached. They’ll be gone by morning. I told myself that, over and over, but I just couldn’t fight the feeling he was giving me.
We stayed up like this for at least another hour, talking about nothing. I heard the howling and screaming of the monsters outside, and I knew that I wasn’t sleeping tonight. Calum was laying with his head next to my dog. I saw his eyes falling shut, and eventually they shut all the way. His breathing became even and his chest rose and fell. I got up and turned off the lights. I went back over the bed and crawled back to where I was sitting before, and just like that Loki, Calum, and I were all asleep.
