I pull on my thick soled Converse — hopping as I try to shove my feet in— and shrug a chunky off-white sweater as I rush out the door. I lower my head to avoid the slight drizzle, and trudge through the sloshy waters to Rei's house, because, and I quote, ''I'm not old enough to have my own car,'.
I wish I could've brought my sleek clear umbrella, but in my rush to get out of the house the thought gets lost in the chaos.
I glance at the sky—just for a moment—but I just can't resist the pull of the various blue tones painted behind thin stripe-like clouds.
The sun pushes to break free but the ivory puffs of cotton fight to hold it back, becoming less opaque as they do so.
Crickets chirp and a faint smell of smoke fills the air, and I immediately recognize where it's coming from.
Rei's house.
Her home is short and flat, quite the opposite of mine, with long wide discs for roofs and dark burgundies for brick. The textures vary from grainy too smooth, but everything is put together in such a way that the house looks intimidating yet calming at the same time.
The rusty 'Welcome Home' sign hangs lopsided on the door, and I open the hatch weaved into the bottom to pull out the house key.
With a woosh, the door opens and the smell of cinnamon rolls and lettuce wafts my way. I sigh into it and stroll in, calling Rei's name as she thumps down the velvet lined stairs.
My traitorous mouth waters at the sight of damp fresh lettuce dressed in a unique blend of spices appear in my eyesight.
But more importantly, the cinnamon rolls.
Uneven cinnamon swirls in the middle as the glaze melts down the sides from the residue of heat passed from the hot fudge poured delicately on top.
I repeat Rei's name three more times before she answers.
"Girl, you've gotta let me get ready. I still have no idea how you do it so fast," she says through breathes, pulling up her phone camera to check her makeup—angling it in a way that shows off her good side.
In reality, I don't get ready fast, it's just Rei gets ready slow.
I roll my eyes and drag her with one arm to her car, stopping to grab the salad and cinnamon roll waiting for her.
Rei makes a sound that comes out as a mix between a groan and a yelp as she bangs her head into the front seat rushing to climb in.
I can practically hear her ears ringing.
"Ahh - Eunbi! Let go of me!"
I jolt in surprise at her pained tone, and check to see the tips of her fingers turning a sickly shade of purple. My death-grip fingers relax, and I give her an apologetic smile.
"Heh, sorry," I mutter.
I fix my iced tea in the cup holder as Rei munches on the salad. We pull out the driveway as my alarm rings - reminding me to leave Rei's house.
The rain thunders against the windows and the windshield wipers try to slide them off in vain. I watch each raindrop float down the window, catching other ones as it does. The scenes is ordinary, but sometimes the most ordinary things can be extraordinary.
This image is one of those.
As I pull out my phone, I check my notifications and see multiple from my other best friend - Soorin.

Soorin continues to spam me, but I ignore it as I FaceTime her while struggling to swipe up the notifications from her ongoing texts.
A 'whoosh' sound plays as her dazzling features flashes on the screen.
Her long hair is tied up into a slim ponytail, bringing out the velvet blonde highlights underneath. Her thin lips are pursed and her eyebrows are pulled into a glare.
"Ugh, what took you so long? You know I had something important to tell you."
Anyone else might be annoyed, but this is Soorin.
This is her sense of humor.
I laugh and shake my head. "Well, I would've responded but I was slowed down because someone couldn't get ready fast enough." I glance at Rei and she gives me a nasty look.
Soorin chuckles, tossing her hair as her boyfriend, Darek, strangled her in a chokehold.
A chokehold.
"Oh my fu-"
