The next day, as Iris got ready for Eli to come over, her hands were shaking with nerves. What if he hated my paper? What if he doesn't want to be friends because of the atrocious piece of writing that I made him sit through and critique? Iris thought as she desperately tried to find something to wear, throwing clothes all over her bed. She was never at a loss when it came to finding an outfit but now, she was worried about every little thing. Should I keep it casual? Should I try a little bit harder? Iris had no idea what the vibe of this whole thing was going to be and she couldn't decide if she should actually be trying or not.

After going through what seemed to be her entire closet, Iris decided on a plain white tank top, dark blue skinny jeans, and a big forest green cardigan. Once again, the cardigan was being used to cover up the marks that Declan had left on her wrists. She didn't bother to put shoes on, just slipping on some grey fuzzy socks. Iris checked her hair and then headed downstairs to wait for Eli. As she sat on the couch, her phone buzzed in her back pocket.

hey dude are you okay? you skipped fourth and fifth period yesterday. claire said something about a scene in the cafeteria?

Iris sighed as she read the text message from Alli. She loved Alli for being a good friend and wanting to check up on her but she hated herself for not being able to tell Alli what happened. She hated lying to her best friend more than anything in the world but some things just can't be said.

To: allibear <3 :

i'm good. declan and i just got into a stupid fight. it probably looked a lot worse than it was. we're fine now.

———

That was as good of an answer that Iris could give Alli, and it wasn't far from the truth. They did get into a stupid fight and they are fine now. Declan always acted like everything was fine after something like that happened. He never addressed anything except for the part where he would say that he was sorry.

okay good. i'm here if you need me, you know that. what're you up to today?

———

Iris was glad that Alli was moving on with the conversation. It almost amazed her how many times she could tell people that she was fine and they never realized that she was lying. She couldn't blame them though. She definitely did not wear her heart on her sleeve and she had become pretty accustomed to hiding her feelings. That was until Eli came along. Iris feels like he can see right through her. She can't hide the fact that she is flustered around him.

To: allibear <3 :

i'm working on an english assignment with eli goldsworthy

———

Iris knew that Alli was going to have something to say to that. Alli had been teasing her for the past week about Eli. She had caught her staring at him in the hallways and she was always giggling about the fact that Iris couldn't help but talk about all the things that Eli said in English. It wasn't her fault that Eli was a god of literature.
