Ainslie scowled out of nowhere; "I left the lighter on the bench."
Dream adjusted the strap on his shoulder, the cans were already starting to dig into his back. He had still been wearing the same red hoodie since day one because, well, he didn't have anything to replace it with.
The day that the breakout started had begun so well for Dream, because Sapnap returned home with George in tow. The two of his friends had planned out a whole act, similar to how George did that 'lore' stream and revealed that he was at Tommy's place.
God, George was so bad at acting. The thought brought a smile to Dream's face.
"Ugh, I'm so-" Ainslie didn't finish the sentence, instead adjusting her sleeves slightly, "How are we gonna set houses on fire now?"
"And cook." Koby's voice added.
"Well, duh." Ainslie grinned in the corner of Dream's eye.
"We'll find another lighter, until then we can eat the soup cold. It should be pre-cooked." Mid-sentence he dropped the volume of his voice. Keeping his secret didn't mean much to him anymore, but he had started and it kinda didn't seem right to stop now.
It was stupid and illogical, but he needed a reason to come clean. He couldn't just blurt it out randomly. Plus, he justified, as much as he hoped it wasn't true... It would be really inconvenient if he told Ainslie and she started acting weird. Technically telling her could cost both of their lives.
When George had started streaming the day before yesterday, Dream decided to go to the nearby convenience store. He did trust his friends, he would stand by that, but no amount of trust can shake an irrational fear.
At the time, he had told himself that there was no reason to not go to the convenience store and buy something. Sure the three of them didn't need milk or bread, because they ordered takeouts online but... He just needed an excuse to not be there. Looking back, he was glad he left the house, because Geor- well, Sapnap is capable of keeping them both alive until Dream could get to them, not to mention Ainslie and him were both still alive. Who knows what could have gone differently.
A voice interrupted his thoughts.
"Hoodie, why do you get really quiet sometimes? You probably know the best of all of us, so it doesn't make sense for you to get self conscious about your ideas." Koby's voice grated against Dream's nerves. There was something up with that kid.
"What, because I'm not talking constantly like you?"
"No, I mean when you're mid-sentence and suddenly it sounds like you're whispering."
"Koby! You can't just say things like that! What if he's self conscious or something, you don't know how much saying something like that can hurt someone!" Ainslie flicked her head around to look at the boy. Dream just kept walking.
"I figured it's best to keep quiet so we don't attract zombies." He made up the excuse quickly, but it was a pretty good one, since that had happened only earlier when Ainslie opened that spaghetti can.
Ainslie looked away. Dream's insides churned.
Even though it had only been a day since she literally bumped into Dream it really seemed like she was getting more comfortable (though, the circumstances have kinda forced that), he didn't want to ruin that.
It was funny, almost, how when Ainslie bumped into him she dropped that lighter and he had to shout for her. And funny how, when she was running away, Dream felt a little bit sad that he would probably never see that petrified human again. He had felt bad that they felt the need to apologise so much, but it wasn't his place to help.
