"Ugh, Mother, do I have to?" Damia whined as Alfreda ushered her and Teri into the car. "Damia, we've been over this many times," Brenna said. "You have to go to school, just like Teri does."Damia frowned. "Why, Mother?" she asked. "So you can get a good education," Brenna answered as they drove toward Gotham Elementary. "But Mother, I already learned everything from my tutors in the Shadows," Damia protested. Teri mumbled something unintelligible under her breath. "What was that, McGinnis?" Damia asked in a bittersweet voice. "I didn't say anything," Teri said.
"Miss Terencia, Miss Damia, I suggest you both cease this conversation right now before it gets out of hand," Alfreda told them. Both girls sighed. "Okay, Alfreda," Teri said. "Whatever, Pennyworth," Damia said. "Damia, you're not only going to learn," Brenna told her, "you're also going so you can practice socializing with kids your age. Who knows, you might make a friend."
Teri scoffed. "Yeah, like that'll ever happen," she said.
"It could, McGinnis," Damia protested.
"Nuh uh."
"Yeah, huh."
"Nuh uh."
"Yeah, huh."
"Miss Terencia and Miss Damia!"
"Sorry!"
"Shutting up now!"

Damia was sitting alone at a lunch table. So far, today had been horrible for the young bat. The students teased her about the way she talked and the fact that she had an accent. She hadn't made any friends at all. Mother would be disappointed in her and she'd hear a non-stop 'I told you so' rant from McGinnis, and..."Um, hello? Is this seat taken?" Damia looked up to see a girl with ginger hair, hazel eyes, and fair skin holding a brown paper bag. She was gesturing to the chair directly across from the young Wayne.
"...The chair is empty," Damia said matter-of-factly. "I know that," the girl said, sitting down. "My name's Coleen Wilkes," Coleen said, opening her bag. "What's yours?"
"I'm Damia Wayne, daughter of Brenna Wayne and..." Damia trailed off, staring at the red apple Coleen had pulled out of her lunch bag. It was bruised and had brown spots on it. "Wait! Give me your apple," Damia said.
Coleen looked at her in surprise. "Damia-" "Coleen, hand over the apple, now," Damia demanded. Coleen hesitated, but handed Damia the apple anyway. As soon as it was in her grasp, Damia chucked it toward the trash. It went in.
Coleen looked at Damia in shock. "What'd you do that for, Damia?" she asked. "That apple was mushy and rotten. If you had eaten it, you would've gotten sick," Damia told her. "Let me see the rest of your lunch."
Coleen frowned. "That apple was all I had," she said sadly. "How come? Don't your parents make your lunch?" Damia asked. Coleen shook her head. "Well, I shall not allow a friend of mine to starve. You may share my lunch with me," Damia said.
"We're friends?" Coleen asked. Damia thought about it. "Why, yes, I believe I said that we were," she replied. "Cool, thanks Damia," Coleen said.
Later that day, Teri met up with Damia and Coleen after school. "Damia, who's the ginger?" she asked. "Coleen, this is my eldest sister, Terencia McGinnis," Damia said. "Teri, this is Coleen Wilkes, my new friend."
