Chapter Three

My chest rises and falls heavily. Sweat gleams over my brow and drips down my temples. We thought it was seven titans.

But there seemed to be more coming one after the other. And it wasn't just in our east radius but all around us. Our guards failed miserably to keep them out, but it wasn't their fault.

Apparently one of them screamed an abnormal had lead the charge, allowing all the titans to follow its lead. I take cover in a high branch to catch my breath. None of this was going as planned— it was heading towards my worst nightmares.

Screams of titans and humans mixed into an ugly sound that banged into my head. I hated every second of it, wished for it all to stop and end right now. Looking around me I couldn't help but pale at the sight.

It was a damn bloodbath. Body parts littered the forest ground or on the tree branches. Blood of both titans and human stained the trunks making everything ugly.

Everyone was trying their hardest, giving their lives and for what? A stupid titan? I grit my teeth and discard my broken blades. This has to end—now.

We were losing people more than we should, but I wasn't hearing any call of retreat from Erwin. Was he seriously going to eradicate the titans and us for some stupid research? Glancing over my shoulder I watch as Hanji's squad, Erwin's, and a couple other ones surround the captured Titan making sure nothing gets close to it. This was ridiculous, don't they both see the major lose we're gaining here?

"Emma, look out!"

Turning back I nearly jump out of my skin when I come face-to-face with a grinning titan. It was taller than I expected and I could smell it's rotten breath. It simply stared at me though, not making any sudden move.

Till it opens its mouth as wide as it could and leans forward to eat me. I suck in a sharp breath when I jump out the way, and swing myself into the air. It clamped its mouth on the branch before retracting slowly.

Aiming my wires for its shoulders I secure a tight hold on its muscle before pulling myself towards its nape. With one strong swing a chuck of muscle cuts off, ending the monster for good. I find myself in a state of endless fighting. I couldn't stop when I got started.

Everything was coming back to me—my moves, my strength, everything. I needed to kill—kill every last of these monsters. I needed to save everyone, needed to make sure they can be safe. Latching myself onto another titan's forearm I quickly slice off its arm before screaming for one of my squad mates.

"Cut the nape, now!" I shout desperately.

Nat was the first to take action and swerves herself into my direction. Giving off a loud cry, she swings with all her might till the entire nape is cut in half. Her strength surprised me, not once has she possessed such a force. We both secure ourselves on the same trunk breathing heavily.

"How—how's everyone?" I breathe. She takes a moment before answering.

"Not good," she answers finally. "Daniel is getting tired and Sean is getting sloppy. Everyone's reaching their limit, Lieutenant." She looks at me with fear coating her eyes. I blink once attempting not to show her that I felt the same too. "When's the Commander going to call it off?" She asks desperately. "We can't—we can't keep this up any longer."

She was right. That was a well known fact, we couldn't do this forever. Someone had to convince Erwin otherwise. I look around frantically till I see a familiar raven undercut hair flying through the air. I release a small sigh, he's doing good. That was the least of my worries now.

"Nat, hold on just a little longer," I say. "I'll try to talk to him. Just make sure no one else dies until then."

"Better said than done," She mutters but obeys anyway. I watch her leap back into action before turning to my new mission.
