Chapter 1
“Lia! Wake up! You’ll be late for your first day of senior year!” I heard my mom shout. I groaned as I rubbed my eyes. I sat up as my eyes adjusted to the sunlight seeping through my bedroom window. Ugh! School! Thanks Mom for reminding me that summer’s ended and hell starts once again. I groggily stepped out of bed and head my way to the bathroom to brush my teeth. After that stuff, I quickly changed into my nerdy clothes; a white collared shirt, baggy jeans, and my knee high white socks. I grabbed my red plaid backpack and my huge fake black glasses and headed down stairs to meet my mother who most likely will be forcing her new disgusting creations down my throat. My mom, she’s… uh… she’s a pro cook, but some of her creations are just disgusting. They look cookbook perfect, but the ingredients in them are just wrong. Who eats freaking snails for breakfast?
“Oh Lia! Come here! I made your favorite breakfast; ham and cheese omelet, bacon, and pancakes,” Mom called. Her smile faded once she saw my outfit. We’ve been over my fashion choices before, but I don’t want to be known throughout the school as the real me. Nerdy, intelligent, shy, and innocent me will have to do.
“I thought we’ve been over this Lia,” Mom gave me a stern look. “I told you already, stop pretending to be someone else. You’re who you are, don’t change that. They’ll like you for who you are.” I groaned internally.
“Mom,” I said with an exasperated tone and a dark look, “I f they knew the real me, they’ll be terrified. I’m one of the deadliest street fighters out there! They’ll run for the hills if they find out! I’ll be the school freak and people who hate me will link me to you and hurt you!” I panted after this little rant.
“Okay,” my Mom sighed. Her eyes softened at my tear brimmed eyes. I’ve always been different; I knew that. I was the only kid during kindergarten that didn’t have a father. I don’t even know what he looks like!
“Just eat your breakfast,” Mom said softly as she pushed my plate towards me. I sighed and picked up my fork and ate a few bites of food. I just knew this school year will be interesting.
After I finished my breakfast, I slipped on my blond and frizzy wig and I slipped on my brown contacts to keep my identity intact. I slipped on my beat up black converse. I added my fake zits and other imperfections. Time to face hell.
The harassment began as soon as I stepped in the bus with my head down. Kids and other students I didn’t even know threw wads of paper and gum towards me. I dodge a few, but I let most of the crap hit me to not raise any suspicion. The bus driver didn’t even care about my harassment; she just continued driving.
When we got to the school, I was tripped on my way off the bus. To other people, it looked like I fell flat on my face, but in reality I stopped myself last second to stop myself from hurting. I stood back up and lowered my head and hurried into the building, trying to avoid the abuse along the way. The halls were filled with groups of students standing idly by. I was walking towards my locker, when I was suddenly shoved into a row of lockers. I gasped as I struggled to breathe.
I turned around to see Ryder Carson, in all his glory. He is the “toughest” person in school. I’m actually tougher than him, but he doesn’t need to know that. He pictures me as a frail nerdy girl who is too weak to stand up for herself. I’m also the school nerd; I’m smart, what can I say? I can pin him down in five minutes or less. He is the leader of a gang. I didn’t bother to remember the name of it, but I heard his gang is one of the most dangerous gangs out there. He has brown, almost black hair and intense green eyes; his arm were chiseled and he had a well formed six pack. He towers over my petite 5’8” frame with a height of 6’ 4”. I’ve fought him once three years ago and he lost to me. Now every year, he fights me again and again and I’m on his gang’s most wanted list. He knows Gen, which is the fighter side of me; the real me. He’s the enemy to both sides of me.
He trapped me with his hands on both sides of my face as I was against the lockers.
“Hey, nerd. Where do you think you’re going?” he said in a slightly menacing tone. I almost scoffed at his attempt to be scary, but I was the fragile nerd, I’m supposed to be frightened by his act. I widened my eyes and had a look of terror on my face, when I’m laughing hysterically on the inside. Most people would probably pray to live right now, but I wasn’t. I’ve experienced a lot worse that Mr. Asshole right here; once some guy used a knife to fight me, but I still beat him.
“I – I was j-ju-just go-going t-to m-my locker,” I stuttered. I get sick of my nerd act sometimes. There are times I just want to punch him and kick him in the balls.
“Hey! Get off of her!” I heard someone yell. Ryder and I turned our heads to the sound of the voice. It was some guy, about my age. He had messy dirty blond hair, friendly blue eyes, and you could so tell he worked out. I’ve never seen him before. He looked furious, and this confused me. Why would a stranger defend me?
“Or what?” Ryder said mockingly.
“You don’t want to know.” He said in the same tone.
“Is that a challenge?”
“Yeah, it is.”
I stared at the two boys as realization hit me. So, before either boy could move, I stepped in between them. They stared at me shocked.
“Don’t you two dare get into a fight. I may not like you Carson and I don’t even know the other guy is, but I don’t want anyone getting into trouble,” I said in a bold and serious tone. Then I widened my eyes when I realized that I used my “Gen” voice. I only talked like that while I'm not in this nerdy disguise. I put my hand up to my mouth in shock.
“Don’t tell me what to do,” Ryder said angrily. Wow, boy’s got anger problems. He shoved me against the wall again. I struggled to breathe as I straightened myself up. The other guy rushed over to me and helped me steady myself.
“Are you okay?” he asked, concern laced in his voice.
“I’m fine.” I said assuring him. I looked him in the eyes and saw that his eyes are similar to mine. I feel like I know him, I just don’t know from where.
“My name’s Aiden Price. I just moved here from California. I’m a senior and I want to be your friend.” He said smiling. He held out his hand.
“I’m Cecelia Morgan. Lia for short and I’m a senior too. I don’t think it’s wise to be my friend. I get harassed every day,” I said sadly. He dropped his hand.
“I was harassed too,” he told me with a smile, but is eyes were filled with sadness.
“I’ll be your friend. We could save each other,” I joked. “Thanks by the way, for defending me. Not many people have the guts to do that,” I told him. He smiled.
“You’re welcome Lia. If people don’t have guts to stand up for a pretty girl like yourself, then they’re all idiots.” He said. We passed by this really cute boy, and I saw him discreetly check him out quickly. Ah, so this guy is gay. I wonder how I’m going to get it out of him. He seems to be the type of guy I would assume to be a player. He’s probably using his player status to cover up being gay. You know what they say; the hot ones always turn out gay. I wonder if Ryder’s gay… wait! Did I just call Ryder freaking Carson hot? Am I getting sick?
“Would it be weird to say that when I saw you, I feel like we had a connection?” Aiden blurted out. I suddenly stopped. I turned to look at him.
“Not at all. I think I felt it too. The feeling like we’ve seen each other before,” I said softly.
“Yeah. I agree.” He said nodding.
“Not in a romantic way, it’s hard to explain.” I said in a louder voice. Aiden just nodded. The bell rang and kids started hurrying to class.
“We should go. We’ll be late for class. Bye!” I said as I started walking away to my homeroom.
I need to find out more about him. I can’t help but feel that I’ve met him somewhere before; somewhere important.
