“Funny, you kinda remind me of Gen.”
“I know who you are…” a voice whispered in the air.
“Who are you?” I whispered to the sound. I looked around at my surroundings. There was nothing. No trees, no grass, no animals, nothing. All there was me and the night sky. I didn’t know where I was. I didn’t even know why I was here. “Where am I?” I questioned.
“You know where you are, Gen,” the voice answered.
Footsteps pattered behind me. I turned around but no one was there. The footsteps replayed now to my left. I did the same but to no avail. No one was there. The footsteps sounded to my right getting closer and closer until the sound was right next to my ears and then it disappeared.
“Who are you!?” I asked louder into the night, slowly backing away taking in my surroundings.
“Don’t you recognize me?” the voice whispered right by me ear. I turned towards the sound and I met face to face with Ryder.
“Lia! Wake up!”
I awoke with a start. My fist was literally inches away from my mom’s face.
“Cecelia Genevieve Morgan!” Mom yelled. “What’s gotten into you?!”
“Ooops! Sorry Mom,” I replied sheepishly. “I just had a bad dream.”
“Wanna talk about it?” she asked her voice laced with concern.
“Nah, it was just a silly little dream,” I assured even thought I wasn’t certain myself. “Anyway, what’s that smell?”
“Hawaiian crepes,” she replied with an excited smile.”I can’t wait for you to try it!”
“Ummm…. What exactly are Hawaiian crepes?” I questioned curiously, kind of afraid of the answer.
“Crepes filled with pineapple and ham, duh,” she answered like it was the most obvious answer in the world.
I stared at her blankly. Did she really just say what I think she said? “Mom, please don’t ever I mean ever say that again. It’s awkward. Just… Please.”
“Fine,” she said hotly. “But they are crepes filled with pineapple chucks and ham.”
“But Mom! I hwate pineapplwes!” I whined like a five year old with a pout.
“Suck it up,” she said and then she got up from the edge of my bed and left the room.
“Dammit,” I cursed under my breath as reluctantly got out of bed. Who ever invented school can go to hell.
By the time I had to leave for the bus, I was ready in typical loser outfit but today I made it even more nerdy. I wore an oversized school sweatshirt, a long brown boho skirt, and brown sandals. Of course I had my ugly blonde wig on and my huge nerd glasses. I was extra careful this morning to make sure I looked nothing like Gen. I don’t want anyone, especially Ryder, to find out who I really am.
“Bye Mom! Bye Em! I’m off for school!” I shouted as I left for the bus stop. I don’t even know why I bother riding the car anymore. Riley got her car back yesterday but whatever. She’s still probably sound asleep right now and will be pissed if I bother her.
“Lia!” Riley called loudly as she approached my locker.
“What do you want?” I sighed, closing my locker. I was still tired from last night and I really wanted some peace and quiet this morning.
“My parents are out for the weekend again,” Riley said. “Wanna stay over?”
“Are you sure you can?” I asked. I knew her parents didn’t care much but I wanted to make sure.
Riley laughed. “If they cared, they’d be here. So, are you going?”
“Why not?” I shrugged. I always went over anyways.
Ring. Ring. Ring.
The first bell rang signaling we had about five minutes to get to class.
“Bye!” Riley and I shouted hastily as we hurried to homeroom.
“Mia Carlos?” Mrs. Manchester asked as she called role.
“Here,” Mia replied from the front of the room.
“Ryder Carson?”
“Here,” his unmistakable, low, raspy voice answered from behind me. My eyes and I bet everyone else’s widened in surprise. The teacher even had to double back in shock. Ryder was never, I mean never ever ever, in homeroom at all. He was here the first day, and then he never showed up again. Why of all days, was he here?
“Ummm,” the teacher said dumbfounded. “Umm…. Um….” She recollected herself and continued on calling role.
“Dude!” Jack, one of Ryder’s friends, called. “What the hell you doin’ here?”
Ryder shrugged. “I was bored.”
He was bored?!? Today of all days when I was still paranoid of him finding out, he finally shows up to homeroom! And he so chooses to sit behind me, where he can notice the wig. What is life doing?
“Hey, Loser,” Ryder called with an obvious smirk on his face from behind like all memory of our mutual friendship last night was thrown out the window and stabbed by a murdered 867 times.
“W-w-w-what do y-y-you w-wa-want?” I stuttered out. Uggh. Sometimes, I just hate having to act this way.
“Not you,” he answered. His idiot friend started laughing his ass off like it was the funniest thing in the world. What was so funny? The joke was lame, and I admit was not the best insult I’ve heard from Ryder. The two continued to make fun of me until the bell finally rang.
As I headed straight for class, I met along the way Riley… with Aiden?
“No, I’m not trying out,” Riley said. “I’m banned from joining any sports teams within a ten mile radius.”
“Why?!” Aiden asked with surprise in his tone.
“Cuz,” I butted in making both jump and then turn towards me. “She kicked three guys in the nuts when she lost to them.”
“What the hell!” Riley exclaimed angrily as she punched me in the shoulders. “I did not do that! I kicked four guys.” She corrected. Oops.
“Same difference,” I stated. “Anyways, we gotta get to class,” I reminded. “We have four minutes.”
“Yes Mom,” Riley rolled her eyes.
“Bye,” Aiden said as we walked our separate ways, him turning left, and us turning right.
As Riley and I walked to class, I couldn’t help but feel like someone was following us.
