It was a lonely Sunday night and as per usual, Nabi was making her way to the bus station after an exhausting day of work at the arena.
When she got to the stop a tall man in a tux with a briefcase sat down next to her and looked at her like he already knew what his intentions were. If she was being honest, she found him a little creepy but still shrugged it off.
"Hello, miss. Can I talk to you?" His monotone voice asked
Nabi turned her head to face him. Her face was wrapped with confusion as she glanced over her to see if the man was talking to someone else. But no one was there besides her and the man.
"I'm sorry sir, I don't believe in god" she stupidly said out of habit
The man chuckled and then replied with
"It's not that. Listen, I wanna let you in on a great opportunity to-"While the man's voice went through her ear, Nabi bit the inside of her cheek to hold her words in that she wasn't interested at all at what he was saying. She was exhausted from work and this particular 'offer' wasn't enough to get her excited in any way.
"Miss, do you want to play a game with me?"
"huh? a game?" *she asked skeptically
The man nodded and opened his briefcase. Her eyes widened when she saw stacks of money in it. Although that wasn't all that it contained. Inside there was a pair of two colored folded papers one red and one blue.
Her eyebrows furrowed in confusion but soon assumed that the game he was referring to was ddakji.
"I'm sure you already know how to play ddakji, right?" The man said to her in his bone-chilling tone.
Nabi slowly nodded
"Play a few rounds with me, and each time you win I'll pay you 100,000 won."
"And if I don't?"
"Then you'll give me the exact same amount of money..." he said leaning forward then continuing with "You can be the first to play".
Nabi thought that the man was trying to scam her for her money, but eventually, she agreed because there could be a chance that he was serious.
Before nodding, she took a deep breath.
"So which color do you want to play as?" He said smiling
After she picked the color that she wanted which was red, they started playing. She tried to flip her paper with all the strength she had, but unfortunately, it didn't budge.
She sighed and looked at the man hoping he wouldn't win. But when the man took his turn, Nabi's eyes widened as she looked at the paper he managed to flip
"Well, is there something wrong? How about you use your body to play" The man said
"Um, pardon?" As the man raises his hand and slaps Nabi with full force
"Hey, What the hell!" She said with her hand placed on her cheek."I'll take a 100 grand off per slap."
"One more round." She said
After that, she took her turn but....lostAgain
And again
And again
And again
Her cheeks were starting to feel numb. At this point people who are getting off the bus and just seeing two people play a game of ddakji very aggressively just thinks that they lost their mind.
Nabi was starting to lose hope, but she decided to try one last time and said to the man who was looking at her with a smile "This is my final one."
Everything felt like one of the dramatic scenes in the movie for Nabi as she picked up her red card and took a deep breath. She throws the paper down with all her might hoping that it'll flip.
After a few seconds of hearing the impact on the other card, she looked at their papers and sighed in relief. She had managed to flip his paper.
Her attention snapped back to the man who gave a slow clap for her single win.
"Congratulations, you did it," the man said to her while handing Nabi a 100 grand. Her eyes widened as she accepted the money hesitantly as if there was a catch.
"You know miss there are other games like this where you could make even more" He mentioned
"Look, thank you for this really, but I don't want to hurt myself even more" Nabi replied knowing that if she agreed she would sound desperate.
"Miss, earlier you had signed away your physical rights" the man said to her standing up. Nabi looks at him weirdly confused about what he meant.
"Your name, Geun Nabi. At Age 22, you work as a registrar at the horse racing arena. You are a college dropout. And you owe an approximate sixteen million won to the bank alone. Both in credit card and student loans"
Nabi felt hairs at the back of her neck stand up. She felt scared hearing how much he knew about her, even her debt. "Who are you?" She said as she watched the man hand her a brown card.
"Think about it" the man said as he walked away.
Nabi examines the card that the man gave, noticing that there is a number at the back.
